The best protection an employer can give their employees is a zero-tolerance policy. A zero tolerance policy in the workplace sends a clear message to all employees that there will be consequences if any violence actions take place in the company. Employees have the right to know the companies policies against violence and that all claims in the workplace will be investigated. If there is a chance the employer knows that an employee may be in a dangerous situation, they have to let the employee know. How to prevent workplace violence
The Occupational Safety and Health Act's require employers to provide a safe and healthful workplace. Meaning that it is the employer’s job to make sure that a safe and healthy workplace that is required is, in fact, a safe and healthy workplace for the employer can be fined for not providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. Providing a safety education for employees is a great way for employees to learn what they can do if they witness or actually being subjected to workplace violence. If employees learn to be able to read the signs from abusers, they will be able to recognize and avoid the situation, all together then chances of workplace violence will decrease. It could be by an employee, customer, or even strangers on the street and no one is safe. It doesn’t matter what your position is in the company there is a risk that you can be pulled into workplace violence. It can range from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. They can be abused physically, mentally, being threaten, or feeling unsafe. It doesn’t have to be within the walls of the company to be called workplace violence. It can be in the parking lot, or delivering a package, as long as you are on the company’s time or properties. It helps a company to have a zero tolerance if one company have a zero policy for violence and another company doesn’t there will be less of a chance for the first company to have violence in the workplace than the second because there are consequences for starting violence. Once managers and human resources know what a threat is then it will help them pick up on warning signs and help prevent workplace
