Skrzynecki’s Immigrant Chronicle explores the impact of migration upon an individual’s sense of identity in terms of the alienation and dislocation following a migrant experience. His collection of poems reflects the pressing concern of an individual’s place in society through emphasising the importance of cultural background in establishing identity, while simultaneously acknowledging his lack of cultural appreciation. His own undefined identity is a recurring element throughout the chronicle, and is expressed in ‘Feliks Skrzynecki’ through contrasting his own uncertainty with the strong bond his father has to his cultural heritage. Furthermore, Skrzynecki’s excessive introspection and self-awareness is evident in the poem ‘Ancestors’ where…

First-Wave Immigrants During the time of revolutionary War a large number in the amount of white immigrants came from the British Isles. There is an association in the social status of a person and their timing from when their ancestors arrived in the United States. However, African Americans are at a disadvantage in this pattern. Although they came over as some of the earliest immigrants, their status is excluded because they are African American and were separate from whites.…
Old immigrants, such as the British, are settlers that came to the Americas, mostly from western and northern Europe, mostly from England and English territories. The topic for my research paper was determined by two specific rationales. Firstly, my lack of knowledge of the history of North Carolina and secondly the fact that I am an immigrant to the country and wanted to understand how my countrymen have influenced the rich cultural and economic history of the state I now call home. As I began to research in a general way, I came to realize that the influence of early immigration had more of an effect on the state of North Carolina than I had imagined. When I first moved here, I was always intrigued at the preponderance of English and Scottish names as I travelled around the state, but did not give too much thought to it.…

Before the fourth grade, the thought of practicing my nonexistent Polish when my grandmother called our landline caused me to dash out the room. I was raised in America, and partaking in my Polish culture was simply a way to ease my parent’s nostalgia for their “Polska.” After moving there for a year, I learned new traditions and developed intimate connections with my family. I finally considered myself a Polish-American.…
As we have seen since the early 1900’s, there is a constant influx of immigrants coming to the USA. Each year, the number of immigrant as well as the number of attempted entries continue to grow. The US has tried to control and reduce the number of immigrant by implementing harsh immigration policies and increasing boarder patrol. However, instead of addressing the problem, there has only been an increase of immigrants being held in detention centers sometimes for year and an increase of deportations as well. Neither, stricter immigration policies nor increased enforcement, has decrease the income of immigrants.…
They mainly resided in urban cities such as San Francisco in New York City. Immigrants used Angel Island as their entry into the US if they chose to come in California and they came through Ellis Island if they were coming through the state of New York. Many people had their last names changed, sometimes immigrant officials did it and sometimes immigrants changed it themselves so that their names wouldn’t be too long and they would be easier to pronounce. Most of the immigrants were Catholic and Jewish. Like immigrants before them, they settled in social enclaves.…
No one person can be completely defined by their culture. Culture can be defined as any beliefs, knowledge, and attitude shared by a group of people. Personally, I identify as Polish and English, but I celebrate the Polish culture more. There are more than just cultures to influence a person. Some of my personal influences are being diagnosed with Graves’ Disease, my father, and growing up in an “Army family.”…
Guhgalski, Guglinski, Giggleski, Googalski. Despite having a relatively easy Polish last name to pronounce (Gugulski), people always find ways to mispronounce it. I have heard my name butchered so many times, I have come to dread the first day of school. My Polish heritage has really shaped the way I have developed as a student, member of society, and person. Without it, I would not have achieved as much as I currently have.…
