Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…
My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…
I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…
Have You Developed a System of Writing That Works Most of The Time I really have not looked up different styles of writing let alone realized there was so many different types of it. My method is not necessarily a method per se, I have always for the longest time just wrote down as if I was speaking to someone. That to me was where my biggest praise came from, that I was able to write with such voice and was able to emulate my presence through the pages. When writing for an essay there is a period where I read and reread the question to gather all the information that is needed. Once the question is fully understood, I try to explain myself in full detail.…
Writing is an art; we create our thoughts in your mind and express it on paper. Once we start writing we keep getting new ideas and when we re-read what we wrote, sometimes it might surprise us. I like to write during early mornings or in the evening when it is quiet. My reading table is facing towards the window so when fresh air is in my room, fresh ideas generate inside me as well. I make sure to have some healthy snacks and a bottle of water in front me…
What are some writing strategies I have incorporated into my writing style? Until this year I have never used a specific way of writing, I have always just written down what comes to my mind and then edited it to make it sound better. While being in dual English I have learned some new skills that will have a significant change in my writing, and I have decided to start incorporating these writing strategies to help my writing skills grow, they are, brainstorming, outlining what I am going to be writing about and how I am going to write about it, and using writing patterns to follow a map of how my essay is going to be written, through the use of these writing strategies my writing skills have greatly improved in just a short amount of time.…
One of the very first memories I had as a child was lying in bed at night and listening to my mom read stories to me. I would always have my pajamas lying in my bunk bed in my blue paint colored room. Every night before bed I would curl up next to her in bed and pick several books for her to read. As I got older, I would pick bigger, harder, and longer books to read.…
Over the Semester my writing has improved immensely in comparison to my previous years of literature. Before ninth grade, I would use an abounding amount of simple words like “very” or “because”. In ninth grade on the other hand I have started to and continue to use words and phrases like “exceedingly” and “due to the fact.” This presents improvement in my writing because using words like exceedingly is evidence that the writer is a higher level writer due to the fact that it is a complex word. Another example of advancement in my writing is the amount of transitions I put in my writing.…
Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…
A few exceptions in a writing class doesn’t improve writing skills. As a bilingual person I tent to write wrong, and commit many mistakes. When I recently got to the U.S.A I always had many trouble writing. In college and with the teacher having no exception when it comes to writing it had help me improve my writing, I see the way I was writing wasn’t a good way of writing things. I still have problems when writing, but I had been able to learn from my mistakes and write the sentences the way they should be written .The…
When it comes to writing for either a class or for my own enjoyment, I never thought of what I actually was good at doing as a writer. I just wrote what came to mind. Now that I’ve given it a thought, I’ve realized that I am consistent in being able to write in complete sentences. They may not always flow or fit together as well as they should but they are complete sentences. Writing is unquestionably hard for me.…
Crazy is the word I choose to best describe my life currently. Being in college is hard, then again, going back to college in your thirties with the spans of a decade between classes is potentially exhausting, if not grueling. My story is a classic, hardly unique, that many others could write it as well. After graduating high school, I started taking general education courses at my local community college to get them out of the way before enrolling into more degree specific courses.…
Writing for an audience was not my strong suit before coming to UMass. My writing always focused on speaking to whoever stumbled upon it. To me, literature, in any form, was always meant for the masses. I composed my words in a manner anyone could understand.…
When I began this English course I was not the writer I am today. I wrote with several errors. I always thought I was an okay writer, but I did not realize I was not good enough to get the grades I wanted in college. I feel like I can say my writing has improved because of this class. For one I now know how to correctly do MLA format.…
Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…
