The murals on the second floor of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology are scaled watercolor replications of the those painted on the walls of the so-called Villa of the Mysteries in Italy. They were commissioned by Francis W. Kelsey in 1924 to preserve the amazing images of the frescoes from continuing deterioration and were re-created by Maria Barosso, an Italian artist, over the course of two years. The original images were first painted on the walls of a Roman villa outside of Pompeii and ultimately affected by the infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius. As they were created near the beginning of the first century, what the murals depict, or why they were created is relatively unknown. There are theories, of course, but Italy today is much different than it was nearly two thousand years ago, so no one knows for certain.…

In your own words, explain why the stratum corneum is so important when discussing dermal absorption? The Stratum Corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and it is made up of stratified squamous epithelium with no blood vessels. As the cells of the epidermis divides and age, the older epidermal cells are pushed away from the dermis to the epidermis towards its outer surface (stratum corneum). It would be right to describe the stratified squamous cells of the stratum corneum as many layers of thin, flat, tightly packed dead/keratinized cells which will eventually shed off.…

Ruth Awasa, a Japanese American internment camp survivor, once stated, “Sometimes good comes through adversity” (Awasa). After viewing and researching several articles and pictures on densho.org, I gathered some pieces of knowledge about the Japanese Americans that resided in the Minidoka Internment Camp in southern Idaho. The internment camp residents I believe faced treatment there that was not justified for their situations. Additionally, the Japanese Americans there, especially the younger people, I argue, had a positive attitude throughout, like Ruth Awasa. Minidoka was in a very desolate and barren place in the state, so it was easy to become depressed over the surroundings that the Japanese Americans faced.…

In human skin, the Pacinian Corpuscles are mostly responsible for rapid adaptation. The interesting feature of these cells is that they are very sensitive even to very small changes in the stimulus. As an example, slightest variations in the tactile forces can be sensed by the Pacinian Corpuscles. Their normal pulse rates return really quickly, in a matter of less than 0.1 seconds. In order the mechanoreceptors to be protected from hostile environment and various types of traumas, they are normally located in the subcutaneous layer of the skin since its harder for the anything to get to that layer since it is the deepest layer of the dermis.…

To experience the surrounding world, the human body uses biological systems, senses, to interpret external stimuli and form a coherent, tangible view. The senses consist of seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting, where seeing and hearing are the most crucial. The perception of the world is the brain’s ability to analyze the incoming sensation messages and relay them back; sensation is both the initial messages sent by the nerves and the complete resulting picture created by the brain. The complete picture that humans experience is made up by both the senses and brain but are not experienced directly. Instead, the stimuli created by the senses are translated into electrical impulses, called transduction, that then move to the brain…
