Revisiting the Situation
As part of an assessment piece, I conducted an interview with person who I did not know prior in order to simulate a scenario I may encounter with a client in the future as a health professional. In the ten minutes I was given, I directed a sustained interview supported by effective listening, questioning and responding skills to initiate an understanding of the interviewee’s profile and to establish a professional rapport with the interviewee. Prior to the interview I realised I was experiencing anxiety and apprehensive as I feared my nerves would hinder my ability to deliver a beneficial interaction with the interviewee. Although, once the interview commenced, I immediately adapted …show more content…
The interview substantially modified my perspective on the gravity of nervousness and how it can significantly alter my potential to direct a professional and fulfilling interview. Skills that I identified in the interview were my abilities to implement the techniques of smiling and eye contact as catalysts for an effective delivery. Having analysed my fortes and discussed the importance of good communication, I have developed an understanding of the standard I wish to achieve. In future, I would like to be able to present myself professionally and utilise effective communication in consultations in order to develop a remarkable rapport with clients. In order to eliminate my vulnerability of fidgeting, Bays et al. suggest a potential strategy in consultations would be to sit with my legs folded and cross my feet (2014). Additionally, in order to eliminate my vulnerability of using informal language, Bays et al. suggest a potential strategy to use in consultations would be to practice what to say beforehand and to use precise language that is uncluttered with slang and jargon words that have the potential to detract the clarity from the client (2014). These strategies are realistic and achievable since, with practise, they will be easy to apply and they can be implemented discreetly to eliminate any further distraction of the client. I will know I have achieved my aim when I am able to interact with clients with a professional manner and demonstrate empathy to provide them with premium service. The next time I conduct an interview with someone, I am now confident I will eliminate the
