Writing a paper, such as this eight page research paper, can be a daunting task to contemplate. Where do I begin? How am I going to create eight pages of words? Even before answering the previous questions a writer should consider using a prewriting tool, such as outlining or concept mapping. So, the new question the writer should be asking is: which prewriting activity should I use, an outline or a concept map? The answer to this question depends on the type of assignment given and how many ideas the student already has. Outlines include a careful organization plan, mental effort reduction, improvement of argumentative text, apply structure to ideas, revise ideas, and coordinate a writing process. Concept mapping is great for writers who need to brainstorm ideas and organize them showing the relationships. Outlines are for organizing ideas the writer already has to help them see the arguments or main points authors must include. Both prewriting options are for organizing ideas but, which writers use can depend on how much information they have on the writing topic. Another difference between concept mapping and outlining is that outlining emphasizes the quality of ideas whereas concept mapping highlights the quality of ideas. Both prewriting strategies were shown to be effective on argument essays.
