“The Germans are bombing again,”
“Thanks a lot,” he sarcastically replied, “I should have expected that, after all, this is World War II?” He says, heading deeper into the tunnel.
“How much further?” He asks as another bomb explodes shaking the passageway, Freddie gets moving as fast as possible. The building shakes yet again followed by still another blast. With the dust, falling all around one more good blast potentially could bring this old relic of a building rattling down on the both of them. Nevertheless, Michelle pays the constant blasts and the unsteady integrity of the tunnel no mind.
“The Germans have taken over our country,” she says. Freddie listens to her tone, and trying to read her voice and based on what he hears, he is convinced

“No, I’m not a spy and trust me. You wouldn’t believe where I come from,” quickly changing the topic. “Everybody knows what happened to the Jews. He’s gassed the poor suckers to death, thousands of them a day.” “What are you saying?” “He claims to relocate them,” Freddie raises his voice in disgust. “But it’s more like relocating the bodies. He is one crazy bastard, dead set on a mission to exterminate every Jew on the face of the earth. You’ve got to believe me. He clearly wants to kill every Jew in the world, and he’s out of his fucking mind.” Freddie tries to educate the French girl about the truth of Hitler’s real intentions. “Millions will die before this nightmare is over.” He adds. “Millions”
Michelle, although convinced he is telling the truth, is baffled by his unconventional comments. “How do you know Hitler is exterminating the Jews?” She cannot figure out why he seems to know so much. “How do you know millions will die, how?”
“If I told you, you wouldn’t believe me,” evasively, he answers her question, debating whether he should tell her the truth or not. He decides against it, feeling she would not believe him anyway, especially the part about coming from the

Stunned by the voices and not sure if she thinks he indeed is a spy, he stops.
“Oh, hell no,” he says to himself. “What’s up ahead?”
“The Resistance”
“The who?”
Moving slowly through the dark and narrow tunnel accidentally shining the light on Michelle’s face, surprised by how young she is.
“You’re just a kid!” “Eighteen is hardly a kid.” trying to block the light from her eyes, “Now, please, get that beam from my face and move. The Germans will discover those men, and they will be everywhere.” Freddie continues moving closer to the light. The closer he gets, the louder the voices, and he sees four men armed with machine guns standing in the entrance. “Quien Est la.” One of the Frenchmen yells aiming his weapon at the passageway.
Freddie panics when he sees the gun pointing at him.
“Don’t shoot!” he yells, looking down the barrel of God knows what type of weapon.
“Vingt-deux!” Michelle immediately shouts out to the others. Once they hear those words they put down the machine guns, Freddie turns to Michelle.
“How many times are you going to save my life?” Michelle avoids the question. Instead, she has locked in on something more valuable, something she must know

I took them all away, and if there was ever a time I needed a distraction, this was it” (Zusak, 350).8 In this quote, Death is describing the suffering and misery the Jews went through when they were taking their last breaths in the poisonous gas chambers, and how this was such a horrific thing Death witnessed that even Death needed a distraction from the gruesome scene. This quote is extremely important because not only does it use intense description to make the reader visualize and connect with the book more, but it also provides historically accurate information that allows the reader to gain more knowledge on the horrid things Hitler had done.9 Because of these barbarous and unfortunate events, Death realizes that he is constantly “overestimating and underestimating the human race...how [could] the same thing be so ugly and so glorious...so damning and brilliant” (Zusak, 550), which perfectly shows the paradox of humanity, and how a human can be two completely contradictory things at once. Adolf Hitler is an accurate example of the brutality a human is capable of, which is seen through the history of WWII and The Book…

“Stop!” a man’s shout rings through the streets as a man sprints down an alley, chased by those in clinking, shimmering armor. The walls surrounding them were fashioned of dull, stone bricks that stacked on top of each other formed odd patterns with minuscule ledges. The first man was shrouded in a black cloak but he wasted no time in scaling the wall on his left; he was favoring his right side as blood trickled down a gash in his shoulder. The man was flying up the wall, over half way up when the armed men below him catch up.…
