Conformity As a correctional officer there are a number of rules, regulations, and unwritten rules one may learn. Higher ranked officers often place stress on new officers, referred to as new jacks, pertaining to the control over inmates (Conover, 2001). The stress or pressure from the ranked…
I got the chance to experience firsthand of the closeness of the Officers at the department, there are three units in the Newport News office: the sex offender unit, mental illness, and general population. Each Officer is able to go to each other to ask for assistance on paperwork as well as trading shifts for intake. I have also had the pleasure to experience how helping the Officers are with the client. The start of my internship I was under supervision of Officer Baines, my first assignment was to witness a case opening. A case opening is the first initial meeting between the Officer and the client, the client has to answer several routine questioners which have been created by the department, and the client and the Officer create a relationship.…
From my observations, although the officers are in violent, dangerous, and disordered crowds there can be order and control in these environments. Many of the inmates want to finish their time or even shorten it with good behavior. They don’t want any of their privileges to be taken away since they already reside in an inhumane environment. The officers can easily revoke the inmate of his/her privileges or even put them in a secluded cell. Order in the prison or jail can easily be given once their privileges are threatened and the officers stay consistent in their leadership role.…
1. Discuss what you have learned about the role of the nurse in this setting with the information in your textbook regarding the role. (10 points) Answer here: Health promotion and prevention is a key aspect of the nursing role for Correctional Nursing because the time that they are incarcerated it presents an ideal opportunity to provide access to interventions to improve the offender’s long-term heath. Correction nurses have multiple roles by being the caregiver as well as the custodian, counselor, advocate, infection control, educator, disciplinarian, phlebotomist, conflict manager and DNA sample collector. The corrections nurse has great autonomy as the physician is only on site once a week at Regional Facilities.…
What types of services are offered to inmates? "The philosophy under which the jail operates may provide only for those services required by law, or it may advocate education, treatment and work programs"(Bowker,2003). Many different programs are offered to offenders during their time of incarceration. These programs have created not only to reinforce the safety and order of the prison but also to improve public safety by making inmates more productive upon their release back into society. Consequently, inmates can participate in a wide variety of opportunities and are provided a schedule of the offered programs and instructions on how to sign up according to the attend section in unit five(Behtel,2015).…
Computer and employee errors plague the federal prison system according to a recent USA Today article. One man was held almost three years longer than he should have been held because an employee failed to apply his credit for time served in a state prison. In two other troubling cases, two inmates were held longer than necessary, one for over 500 days and the other for over 400 additional days. Keeping federal inmates in prison past their release date violates the court's sentencing, deprives individuals of their liberty, costs the prison system money for additional incarceration time and leaves the Federal Bureau of Prisons at risk for lawsuits. In response to one man's lawsuit, assistant U.S. attorney in Minneapolis implied that the inmate…
Fewer Americans are going to prison. First, the cost of conserving a prison is high. The text states, “...is the associated cost of maintaining prisons and the recession in the U.S. from December 2007 to June 2009. Between 2011 and 2012, prisons in a number of states had to shut their doors, and many prison building projects were abandoned due to rising cost, notes the Times.” Second, the prisons are crammed full of people.…
Their main goal is to conduct investigations on the offender's behalf, to solve issues regarding any complaints you and your fellow prisoners may have. They also have the responsibility to review and make recommendations to those controlling the prison, focusing on individuals' complaints to ensure that any areas of concern are identified and addressed properly. They do this to ensure the safety of all those in the system, to prevent any disastrous outcomes. It's not only for the safety of the officers, but of the convicted as well. Any inquiries can be directed towards them by your Correctional Investigator or via complaint.…
Scholarly research has demonstrated the many correctional treatment programs have effectively reduced recidivism rates (Cullen & Gendreau, 2000). Although the concepts of rehabilitation and correctional treatment were dominant throughout the majority of the twentieth century, they have been subject to much debate and criticism. Such controversy can be seen when examining the three different shifts in thinking about offenders and how such views have influenced correctional treatment models. In the early 1800s, “penitentiaries” were established as offenders were removed from society in order to transform their behaviors by placing them in a more structured environment (Cullen & Gendreau, 2000).…
“The correctional ideology refers to a body of ideas and practices that pertain to the processing of offenders, as determined by law.” There are three main correctional ideologies: punishment, rehabilitation, and prevention. Throughout history, these have been the methods used to deal with offenders. The make-up of these ideologies connects to the public’s opinion of the criminals. Whether society has chosen an “eye for an eye,” a more humane standard, or a hope to prevent crime, these ideologies have no doubt changed throughout time to accommodate the public’s needs.…

“…over 11 million people cycle through local jails each year,” (Prison Policy Initiative 2015). Because of this constant transfer of people from the jailhouse to the real world, correctional counselors are definitely needed. The purpose of having correctional counselors is to help inmates process the transition from jail or prison back to the real world. This counseling gives inmates the opportunity to express their fears and obstacles they think they will have to face before actually being forced to face them. Correctional counselors are there to help inmates choose the right path before leaving jail or prison.…
