During World War II women played many important roles both at home and in service. Social roles at this time were defined clearly, a women was usually at home taking care of the house and children. There were exceptions for women to work certain jobs if they had no family to take care of, but they were paid less than men were. They were not allowed to be in combat, although some of the jobs they did brought them very close. The women in service did jobs mainly relating to work in an office. This freed more men to fight in the war while they did the jobs that were usually taken care of by men.
