Throughout “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, there are a lot of occasions in which a woman attempts to emasculate a male, this has a negative effect on the men. Emasculation of the men of the hospital is so important because it antagonizes the women as they are essentially attacking the protagonists of the book, the men in the hospital. The novel refines this idea, Nurse Ratched had to keep her femininity under cover because this allowed her to keep her power. Mcmurphy says, “She attempts to conceal her breasts”. The nurse constantly has to keep her femininity hidden because otherwise the men would rebel against her demanding power as she is a woman and they are men. Not to mention, she might be in danger of assault or sexual assault. Furthermore if Nurse Ratched femininity was seen by the men, she would lose her power that she had built up over years. Once Mcmurphy attacks Nurse Ratched as his final move, Chief observes that Mcmurphy is, “Ripping her uniform all the way down from the front (318-319). In this act Mcmurphy jumps on her, strangles her, and strips her of her uniform. Her breasts her fully exposed and everyone is once again reminded that she is a women and should have no power over them, the men. As a result of Mcmurphy stripping Nurse Ratched of her uniform and power, the nurse is not able to regain her old power the days following her return. Chief says, “She tried to get the ward back into shape, but it was useless….She couldn’t rule with her old power anymore”. After the incident with Mcmurphy the Nurse is shaken up and she seems significantly weaker as the men do not fear her anymore. Many men sign out of the ward and many other men transfer to other wards.
