Artwork offers a visual insight into the culture in the Americas during the time of colonization. The casta paintings provide the best evidence to represent the melting pot of human cultures in the Americas during the early days of settlement. The 15th panel in the 1763 Caste Painting Series by Miguel Cabrera; De Mestizo y d 'India is an oil on canvas painting which depicts a mixed race family; a Mestizo man, an Indian woman and their two children, whom the caste system labels as “Coyotes”. In the image of a mural painted by frank romero “Going to the Olympics, 1984” shows a beautiful painting done on the side of a Hollywood freeway. It was dedicated to the Olympics, it has 5 old model type cars with valentine hearts over each car, there are palm trees in the background as well he uses light pastel colors to give off the light cheery mood. On top in the sky of the mural are symbols as well; there is an iron, two men wrestling, a Good Year blimp, a stallion, and a mailing stamp. I believe in that time period Romero might have felt that he city’s car culture was beautiful because there might have not been that much traffic, you can tell he feels that way from the valentine hearts over each car. You can also take in the fact…

Public art is all around us, and when you take a moment to look around you’ll find some amazing pieces. While walking around downtown there is always one mural that catches my eye every time. Located on the back side of the Burton Cummings Theatre (formerly known as the Walker Theatre, 364 Smith Street.) is an untitled piece by Winston Leathers (1932-2004). Maybe it’s the vibrant colours, or the fact that I spent just over 14 hours waiting outside the theatre two years ago waiting to see my favourite band perform. Either way, I can’t help but do a double take when I happen to walk by.…

In today’s society, we don’t pay near enough respects to our veterans especially our Vietnam veterans; which is why I chose to honor them by selecting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall created by Maya Lin and can be found in Chapter Two Page 81 in the Reality Through the Arts textbook. These brave men fought for our country either by choice or by being drafted either way I would like for each and every one of us to take a moment while reading this to honor them by learning just a little bit more of why and how the Memorial Wall was created. An artist such as Maya Lin has to consider many factors before they will create a sculpture such as the memorial. One factor that many people including myself never even thought about is the lighting and…

Our artwork will be a sculpture in the round, giant beer mug that says “Oregon Micro Brews,” in moss, on the mug. The mug itself will be made out of concrete to utilize the porosity of the medium. The artwork will be sitting on a pedestal of sorts with a plaque that lists all the microbreweries in Oregon. The function of the piece is to bring awareness, respect, and regional pride in what Oregonians have accomplished; Having more microbreweries, per capita, then any other state.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
