Winston and his Comrades
1984 , a novel by George Orwell is about Winston Smith , a member of the Outer Party in London , Oceania. The Outer Party is the people who work in the party’s government , in the four ministries. This novel explains how everyone in the party is always being watched through telescreens by the Thought Police. Throughout this novel , Winston shares a lot of his emotions and thoughts through writing in his journal. In Part I Winston has a few encounters with other party members such as Syme and Parsons . Both Syme and Winston work in the Ministry of Truth. In the Ministry of Truth Winston has the job of rewriting historical documents so they match the constantly changing current party line. Syme specializes in reading and writing. In part I , Syme is working on a Newspeak dictionary , the language of the people , to minimize language so that the citizens will not get in trouble for expressing themselves , because they won't have many words to express themselves with. In Winston’s interaction with Syme , Syme shows that he is a dedicated member of the party. Syme goes on and on with Winston about the hanging that took place the day before. He tells Winston it was a great hanging. Winston did not go to watch the people get hanged, so he answered Syme’s questions. Syme is an example of someone who is into watching criminals getting hanged , watching his people raid other enemies countries and other devastating acts . He is proud to be a member of the party. Winston points out the flaws that could possibly get Syme in trouble . Winston explains , with all the information that Syme knows , “Syme will be vaporized”(p.53) soon because the government does not want people to be intelligent because that leads to rebellion. “He is too intelligent”. Although Parsons is a dedicated party member , he is not very smart and often makes dumb and arrogant statements. “He was a fattish but active man of paralyzing stupidity…”(P.22) Winston does not like Parsons at all because Winston does not like people who are ignorant. Parsons takes pride in his kids and only talks about the party in positive ways . Parsons raised his kids as faithful party members. They are children spies. When Winston walks in Parsons house to help his wife , the kids are watching him and screaming “You’re a traitor ! You’re a thought-criminal !”. There job is to spy on adults and make sure they do not commit thought crime or facecrime. Parsons is someone who is a pet of the party. He follows everything the party teaches and often brags about the party slogans and how faithful he is to them. This is one of the reasons Winston hates Parsons so
