In life, people go through many things. I am the type of person who wants to be different than everyone else. Everyone has their own experiences and struggles, some people are told what they should like and what they should do with their lives. Throughout my life, I have had to deal with many of those things.

Some people live their life being told how to live it and being judged by stereotypes. In the essay “Growing Up Asian in America” there is a good example showing that. It says, “You don’t like cheese, do you? someone would ask. I know your people don’t like cheese.”(pg. 187) In the story, the other students tell the main girl what she likes and doesn’t like. “Weakness is what brings ignorance, cheapness, racism, homophobia, desperation, cruelty, brutality, all these things that will keep a society chained to the ground, one foot nailed to the floor” is a quote by Henry Rollins when referring to the whole topic of racism. Racism has always been apart of the Southern Culture in America, and I think racism is worse now than what it was during the Civil War. However, some people think that over time racism has gotten a lot less calm as our country has gotten older. That isn 't the case because America has moved from name calling to more killing and it offends African Americans, and the way Asian Americans handle people being racist towards them.…

One thing that I learned from Lee’s “The Making of Asian America” was the feelings of the Asian immigrants. Previously, I had not known that many of the Asian immigrants has actually considered themselves “American” and were willing to denounce their home country. Lee explained this well in her section about Japanese immigrants. In this section, she discusses how far the Japanese Americans were willing to go to prove that they were, in fact, American. This includes being obedient to the government’s wishes, prospering in the conditions that they were put into, and even joining U.S. army in WWII.…

The term “Asian” was originally used to define and label everyone that was not white, and by definition, the term generalizes people of vastly different backgrounds, histories, languages, and religions all into one incorrect misappropriately defined category. The term Asian itself is referred to as a race, yet a race is associated with biology. If people are of the same race, the may share the same ancestry or have similar physical characteristics, whereas the term ethnicity is used to refer to the culture one associates itself with. In either situation, the use of the term Asian to define one’s race implies that the entire scope of people, who by law, are identified as Asian, all share the same ancestry and physical features, when that is…

Despite many opposing arguments with a lack of substantial evidence, I am a firm believer in favor of legal immigration. Time and time again, immigrants show how profoundly they impact our modern society and what the added benefits of having a good immigration system are. Asian Americans are the quintessential example of an immigrant. They came to America looking for a better life, brought with them certain skills and knowledge that made them employable, and as a result, integrated into the American economy with ease.…
