William Howard Taft was the 27th president of the United States and was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1857. He always wanted to be a member of the supreme court, but his wife had other aspirations for him The Republican William Howard Taft worked as a judge in Ohio Superior Court and in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals before accepting a post as the first civilian governor of the Philippines in 1900. In 1904, Taft also took on the role of secretary of war in the administration of Theodore Roosevelt. He was also appointed as U.S. solicitor general, the third-highest position in the justice department. After his presidency, he was selected by president Warren Harding in 1921 to replace Edward D. Though he disliked campaigning, Taft agreed to mount a presidential run in 1908 because he was encouraged by his wife, he defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan by saying he would like to continue the progressive policies put in place by Theodore Roosevelt. Taft won the electoral college and the popular vote with 321 electoral votes to Bryan’s 162 and 51.6 percent of the popular vote. Taft won mainly because he was expected to carry on the policies of Theodore Roosevelt and that was good enough for most voters. The campaign slogan used by Taft was “Vote for Taft now, you can vote for Bryan anytime," which was a sarcastic reference to Bryan's two failed previous presidential campaigns. After his first four years in the white House Taft decided to run for a second term mainly to defend himself against attacks from Roosevelt calling him a traitor to reform.
