Too many times people get caught in the net of their own minds, trapped in tedious routine. While you can easily live a self-centered life without ever thinking of others, you should always understand the big picture and what a small part you play in a world of 7.4 billion people. As a society, the earth and everything around us hold beauty if we'd stop and look. To keep yourself grounded and aware, here's some of the simple ways that you can broaden and enrich your perspective before a trip.

Nothing renews the spirit like a hike to the peak of a mountain; not to mention, it's good for your physical condition, and it helps you mentally too. After a long struggle to reach the top, you feel like you conquered what you set out to do, and it will enlighten you with a new perspective and see what a small part humanity plays in the world. Albert Einstein once said, "Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better."

Another type of wilderness therapy is to wait until nighttime, drive to somewhere remote where there's less light pollution and then go outside and gaze upon the stars and known universe. You could even

Traveling to a new country can wipe the slate clean on what you thought you knew because the rules in another country change dramatically. Everything you thought you knew is different. If you've taken the plane many times before, try the train. The rolling hills and mountains in the background as you eat a buffalo chicken panini in the dining car of the train are truly something to behold. On the Amtrak, you sit across from a stranger because of the community seating and learn a new perspective. In one example, Judy Jensen, sat across from a college professor and learn about world history. You feel more alive when you're doing something you've never done

Imagine sitting under a large oak tree with the wind blowing against your face, white daisies blooming, and hummingbirds chirping all around you. Transcendentalists would view this experience with zeal because they believe that the world around them is august and that they can connect with God through it. Mary, I am aware that you disagree with these beliefs and consider it a waste of time to engage in nature. However, if you give the Transcendentalist ideas a chance, you are sure to change your mind and fall in love with the beautiful appearance and tranquil essence of the environment. Absorbing the beauty of our surroundings allows individuals to relax and clear their minds.…

Wilderness Adventure Therapy Effects on the Mental Health of Youth Participants, written by mental health professionals Daniel Bowena, James Neilla, and Simon Crisp (2016), is an evaluation of 36 adolescents participating in a ten-week Wilderness Adventure Therapy (WAT) program in Australia. As young adults make up a large clinical population, many interventions are designed for younger children or adults, so this article begins by expressing the need for therapeutic interventions specifically designed for adolescents (Bowena, Neilla, & Crisp, 2016). Bowena et al. (2016) explain how adventure therapy is an example of a more appropriate intervention for adolescents, as it empowers teenage clients through participating in fun and challenging activities, while applying an eclectic therapeutic approach.…

Over the last decade, wilderness therapy has improved its clinical sophistication and treatment modality. What once was referred to by critics as “hell camps” (Smith 1996) and connotated with numerous incidents where youth were either injured or died as a result of boot camp endeavors has since developed into a healthcare program backed with a growth of balance in the wild: challenges and nurturing, structure and safety, and humility in learning what’s inside and outside of one’s control. In selecting a topic to educatedly ramble on for a decent degree of pages, I dedicated countless hours and multiple migraines to selecting an issue that not only I could learn more about, but that our community (whether immediate or all around) could pick…

According to the Suffolk Times, Shelter Island High School advisor James Bocca and senior Nicolette Frasco presented a request to see the presidential inauguration at the March 2016 Board of Education meeting. “Board of Education members approved the trip,” says the article, “...with the speculation that the students might see the inauguration of the nation’s first woman president.” However, when Donald Trump won the election in November, plans changed quickly. Their superintendent “recommended the Board of Education rescind its previous approval of the January visit and substitute a trip to Washington between May 10 and 13,” the article says. In the superintendent’s words, there was “no reason” to put students “in a position where anything…

“Not all those who wander are lost,” a line from the poem All That Glitters Is Not Gold by J. R. R Tolkien tells how even if you are on a journey and you don’t know quite where your destination is, it can be worth the while. In this unit, we learned about multiple journeys that can convey how the journey is important to gain life long experiences and build upon courage in order to set off on your own. On this journey, we can see some heroes, a hero can be defined as someone who even in the smallest of deeds, can help someone in their time of need. For example, if one kid was sick and another kid was to lend him his notes, that could be defined as an act of heroism. Solely because even though it was a small deed, it still meant a lot.…
