Family life was a struggle. Slaves found a way to escape their poor lives, their lives filled with torture and abuse. Slaves used to have families as a gateway to having freedom in some sort of way. These slaves had children and they were left with aunts or uncles or close friends because the parents could not take care of them. There were both two parent and single parent homes. The single parent homes were because the other parent was sold or killed. Most slaves lacked adequate clothing, shelter, and nutrition and worked long hours. Slaves suffered from beatings that were often because of nothing that they did. Slaves worked for long hours and were paid nothing or close to nothing. They rebelled in different types ways. They got together in groups and went to white people's houses and killed them or set their houses on fire. The slaves who rebelled this way often killed women and children because they attacked while the men were out. Other slaves resisted by small acts of sabotage, like breaking tools or setting things on fire. Slaves that feared punishment tried to run away. They ran away to other places where slavery was abolished, and they could live the rest of their lives as a free human.
