Why two periods of English are better than one?
Two is better than one. This is a simple yet widely accepted fact. Twix bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Little Debbie’s Snack Cakes, and finally, English class all capitalize on this universal truth. Traditionally, all classes, including English class, have been single period classes. However, during the 2016-2017 school year, Theodore Roosevelt High School offered its first two period block English course to a select group of extremely fortunate students. Despite the fact that it may seem like a lot of time, English class should be two periods long because it is twice as important as any other class, it is two times as fun, and it has two times the benefits for students.

English should be considered two times as fun because of its psychological benefits. According to Melissa Richley in her famous article, The Therapeutic Benefits of English for Today’s Youth, “We hooked up electrodes to the brains of over five hundred freshmen in English class and compared the results to very large lab rats in similar circumstances, and found that English class releases similar chemicals in the brain as released when riding roller coasters, having a birthday party or being hugged by a loved one.” Because of the psychological link between English class and happiness, having a longer English class would increase this benefit. An additional reason that doubling English class is two times as much fun, is that it gives more time for learning games and activities. Additionally, large numbers of students believe that English class is the most fun. According to Bryck Hill in the article, Which Class Do Students Think Is The Most Fun? “90% of students believe that English class is the most fun”(1). It stands to reason that if students truly believe that English is the most fun, if English class were twice as long, the amount of fun that students had would only increase.
