Should Student Athletes Be Paid

Many people have recently raised controversy on the subject of whether college athletes should be paid or not. The student athletes feel they should be paid for their performance on the field due to the fact that they spend most of their free time on the field or court practicing the sport they love and they cannot afford to manage school, sports, and a healthy sleep life style on top of working to be able to afford things. College athletes should not be paid for their performance on the field. The student athletes should not be paid to play because they are in school for education, this could cause issues for colleges with auctioning, this can cause money problems for the student athletes, and sports are not a job they are a choice. Student athletes are merely in school for the educational purpose and the perusal of a degree to begin their futures as a fall back plan if sports fall through for them. Most, if not all, high school athletes would love to be in the position of a college commit with the intent of continuing the career of playing the sport they love. *fact about how many athletes are on scholarships*. Given the fact that x% of athletes are on scholarships, plenty of ex high school athletes would love to play the sport they love or used to love and play in college while on scholarships or they would love to have scholarships in general just to go to school and have less worry about the funding of their education. The issue of auctioning also comes to light when debating this subject. One college could simply outbid another college offering the top athletes around the country more money than the next guy swaying them to focus more on the money they would be getting as opposed to the actual purpose of attending a university which is to gain knowledge and earn a degree so one can get a better job and make better money to live a richer life style. These athletes should know what they are signing and they have the choice to agree to the letter or not. This brings up the fact that sports are in fact not a job and are simply a choice. These athletes should not be paid for making a choice to do something extracurricular. Financial majors are not given $ 10,000 just because they are at school, so why should athletes be any different? Athletics are a choice and people can in fact move on to the next level but life itself is about sacrificing things you want to do in order to be able to do what you need to do so that you can become successful. The athletes should not be asking for money from the NCAA and rather their parents. There are some cases in which an athlete’s family does not have the finances to be able to provide their child with the things they might need but these athletes can sacrifice an $8 meal at McDonalds and they can just go to the school cafeteria to eat a meal instead. Many sacrifices can be made by these students in order to make life suitable for these athletes rather than giving them
