Teenagers need at least 8-9 hours of sleep a night for health and brain development. Teenagers who do not get enough sleep on average are the most likely and carry a significant risk for drowsy driving, depression, and emotional and behavioral problems. The problems with sleep deprivation during the adolescent years are very serious. Everyday teenagers are unable to maximize their learning opportunities, because sleep deprivation can lead impairing their abilities to solve problems, be alert, and pay attention. They even have poor impulse control and have violent tendencies when getting less than 8 hours of sleep a night. Even though sleep deprivation significantly decreases the student’s grades, it even lowers their athletic ability as well. A study conducted in 2008 in the Journal of Clinical Sleep, shows that delaying the start of the school day can reduce automobile accidents caused by sleep deprived teenagers. Crash rates fell a surprising 16.5% in two years when the school time was delayed, compared to the previous two years before the delaying of the school day.
