Why Lying Is Wrong

Improved Essays
Is lying really wrong? Yes, it is. Lying is most of the time very wrong, because you lose trust in people you are close to. Who lies the most? Teens. How can we learn from teens? I think we should pay close attention to how teens lie to their parents. Loretta Ragsdell’s article, “Teens Do Their Share of Lying” talks about real life teenagers who lie to their parents to get out of trouble. This article includes a quote from a teen named Debra. Debra says, “Now, the truth is I’ve been over to my boyfriend’s house, or somewhere else, I should not have been, so I lie,” (par.7 Ragsdell) Teens like Debra think it is normal to lie to your parents, she says it so comfortably. She is not allowed to do certain things, so she lies, but maybe if she never lied she would be able to do those things and not have to lie in the first place. What’s the point of lying when you get in trouble which leads to more lying?

Lying is difficult, when you get caught people can’t believe or trust you, like the boy who cried wolf. That little boy received a bad reputation. That’s another thing, lying disrupts out image, Brad Blanton says the same thing, in his interview with Barbara Ballinger, “Brad Blanton: Honestly, Tell the Truth” he says, “We lie to maintain an image.” (par. 9

But if you lie to hold a relationship, you shouldn’t be in that relationship, you’re just hurting your mom, dad, brother, sister, cousin, whoever it is you’re hurting them as well as yourself. If you lose how close you are to a person because you told the truth, then they don’t accept the real you, that or it was your fault you messed up. They can’t handle the truth, that’s what I took from Blanton’s interview. In conclusion, lying is bad and can ruin a relationship. People rely on others for help which starts from trust. Next time you lie, think about how the consequences can not only ruin your relationship with another, but as a result it hurts you

In the essay The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, she mentions on how she discovered that telling the truth all the time is nearly impossible because it would be living with some serious consequences. Throughout the history of the United States and other parts of the world, a high percentage of people tend to not be able to tell the truth when they are asked simple questions by members of their family or by their close friends. As telling the truth may have consequences, telling lies may have deeper consequences that cannot only hurt the person telling the lie, but it can affect the person being lied to. Being known as a liar can cause problems in a relationship because it will bring on trust issues and can also cause one’s partner to overthink…

“You never look good trying to make someone else feel bad,” this quote alone speaks volumes. How can someone just lie on an innocent individual just to protect their wrongdoings and continue on with life without feeling guilty? But at the same time, this game called lying is the “new black”. Many individuals today in society and from the previous eras failed to realize that “if you just tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” Mainly because when someone has told a lie they must create many lies after that to keep up with their story and it becomes too much and they begin to forget the first lie they even told.…

Teens also said that if you get caught in a lie, just make up another lie to cover up that lie. All this led me to believe that it's only right to lie sometimes in certain occasions. The four articles all gave good examples on why you should or shouldn't or sometimes should lie about sometimes. I think you should not lie for your own gain nor anything else that can cause harm, the whole moral is that you should not really lie. You shouldn't be allowed to lie for your own gain.…

Studies show that lying is sometimes acceptable in certain situations to prevent any harm that can be brought on an individual. Lying to protect an individual secures the situation by sugar coating a lie that is being performed. Misleading someone can cause harm such as trust issues and that reflects badly on the person who is lying. Lying must be taken into consideration when it could protect one another. For Example, in the article “It’s the Truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying” by Randy Cohen says, ¨In the AP-Ipsos poll, 65 percent of those questioned said it was sometimes OK to lie to avoid hurting someone's feelings.”…

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…
