Why It Is Difficult To Work In Groups

Improved Essays
Working in groups can be difficult. This semester, in one of my classes we have a group project that we have to work on throughout the semester. In my group there are seven people. We all are responsible for turning in a final paper, presentation, and evaluating one another. As college students, it is difficult to get everyone to work on the project at once. My group members and I introduced each other when we were placed in the group. Afterwards, we have not meet once in person. We communicate through a group chat and on google doc. On the google doc, we had agreed on deadlines that our paper and presentation would be done. This relates to the concept of team self-evaluation, "create measurable task and process objectives and then measure them" (Johnson, p. 300). Everyone had to do research …show more content…
Only three of the seven members, did their part including the research and paragraphs. Everyone else, just did their research and worked on the google doc once. Being in a group, it is difficult to confront people and tell them to do their part. Some individuals, may perceive the person who is confronting them as bossy or won't like them being in charge.

Our presentation is due in a week in a half and my group still has not finished the paper. Earlier, in the semester one of my group members, made it clear to finish the paper by the second week of March. Most individuals agreed, but a few did not respond. Those who did not respond, would never contribute to the conversations we would have group chat. It was difficult to figure out who was not answering because we didn't save the individual as a contact in our phones. We just numbers popping up in the conversation. Later, one of the group members asked everyone to send a text with their name. Afterwards, I decided to message the group to see if everyone finished their part of the

Hi Professor, For the Group-Led Discussion I did the introduction. I emailed the whole group on March 5 before spring break so we could get started on the assignment because spring break was coming up. Right away I got an email from Giselle she helped to explain what needed to be done for the assignment. The following day I got an email back from Paige saying she would like to answer question 3.…

The group project felt important to me, because it gave me a chance to present a topic that was meaningful to me. The topic of my group’s project was anti-racism in protest songs, and showing how many artists took to the stage with their thoughts of equality, attempting to change the way that some people are perceived in this nation. Preparing this project didn’t go without stress or challenges though. My group partners, despite my persistent nagging, procrastinated until the last minute to get any work done, and even though there were five of us in my group, only two people did any significant work on the presentation. As the deadline for the presentation was growing closer, I knew that it was time to act.…

The research project was an assignment I did not enjoy. I felt like the assignment was a little rushed, and that the class was not given enough time to meet with other group members. Not having enough time to do an assignment is one of my biggest pet peeves. I think we should have had class, instead of group conferences. The group conference was a one hour conference with the group and the professor.…

Working in groups has taught me to trust that work will get done and made me realize that I am nt in control of everything. The hardest part, for this project specifically, was to find a time where everyone was able to meet up and discuss the case outside of class hours. Ultimately, however, my group…

I faced the internal struggle of being a good group member and being a good student. I struggled with communicating the urgency of completing the project to the rest of the group and not annoying everyone on the group chat. In the end, this challenge was solved by my fellow group members completing (thankfully and barely) before the deadline. If I could do the project over I would be less passive aggressive and talk to my group members about completing the work together to get it done earlier. Looking past all of my complaints and challenges this group assignment proved to be helpful and educational.…

Group work is very different than what I am use to. I am use to working on projects alone and knowing where I stand. I have always been a shy person and have relied on myself for anything I am working on in school. This particular project really brought me out of my comfort zone and showed me it is okay to ask for help. Marvin Wright's Family Literacy Night was different to say the least.…

I feel like even if you were to sit that person down and explain what is going on, they would still not take accountability for their actions. I think though if the group has set rules in place and that person is not taking responsibility for them then a conversation needs to be had with that person. I think if you’re just honest with them about what was expected of them and then give examples of why they aren’t living up to those expectations, hopefully they’ll change or step up. I can’t stand slackers in groups or in any other setting. I’m a very type A person so when people decide to wait until the last minute or don’t do it at all it stresses me out.…

Domingas Fernandes Evaluation #3 On Wednesday night March 30th, I opened my Blackboard page and noticed that I had a notification from my Virtual Group. My group members had already started the discussion about what Electronic Meeting System we would be using for the assignment. GoogleDoc, being the most widely used, was suggested and everyone seemed to agree with it. We also shared our phone numbers and decided to use iMessage. On the following day, it seemed that everybody forgot that we should be working on the assignment.…

Through the years I have being studying at ECU in the Business program, I have been exposed to the different terms and key concepts of leadership. I actually have assumed leadership positions when working on group projects and special assignments that had to include other students in my class. Nevertheless, after taking the Leadership Capstone class I have to say that it was very beneficial to me. First it brought the opportunity to refresh on leadership terms that I had been exposed to before. Second, as we discussed the skills of a leader and the different presenters told us about their own experiences and which, in their opinion were the attributes of a leader, and what a leader do and don’t do, I was reminded of my group projects and the…

When the deadline for an assignment was nearing, I made sure that everyone was aware and double-checked that each group member had their part finished. During the Annotated Bibliography paper, I reviewed my group member’s sources to see if they would work with our central idea and provide effective evidence to support our claims. If someone had questions about the assignment or needed help with finding valid sources I would help them look up some sources that could support their ideas. I have everyone post the part of the assignment two days prior to the deadline that way I could fix up the format of the paper such as fixing the margin and the font. This also gave group member additional time to make last-minute changes before I submitted the paper.…

Our similar personalities helped us work together. In the beginning, we all agree that we want to get our work done and to use our time in class efficiently, however, some days one of my group members wouldn 't do any work unless we had to ask them to do it, though, towards the end of the project they took the initiative and did what needed to be done without me asking them. When collaborating with my group, I learned communication skills was key in order to effectively plan and organize our project to complete it one on time. The best part of working with a group on this project was that it exposed me to different points of view which made our final product better. Individually, I was able to contribute to the group by completing my work in class and if didn’t I would finish it at home.…
