The existence of a God has always been accepted by almost every people in history until the past couple hundred of years. Every civilization has developed their own religion over time. It is human nature to want to be a part of something bigger than him/herself. Some of these religions are very extreme, and others are simply a statement of belief. From the ancient Greek mythology in which there are hundreds of gods and goddesses that control different parts of life to the single all powerful God, Jehovah, of the Israelites and Christians there are so many different views. “Religion is the first sense of community. Your sense of community occurs by reason of mutual experience with others.” (L. Ron Hubbard). Religion has always had an immense impact on society even the earliest and most primitive civilizations believed in a deity. In addition, secularization can occur on two separate levels: one on the individual awareness level and the other occurs on the level of society. Many religious institutes lost their power or influence within the public sphere. Critical Analysis Paper # 3 Analysis of “Religion Gives Meaning to Life,” by Louis P. Pojman Introduction: In this article, “Religion Gives Meaning to Life,” Louis P. Pojman believes that religion, but mainly a theistic religion gives purpose and meaning to life. Pojman feels that, since people cannot prove that theism is true or not true, then therefore, people should live like theism is true. A world with theism, living life following a higher being would be a better world than living a life of self-governing, autonomy. Lastly, Pojman believes that living in autonomy is not really affected by having a religion or faith but instead religion may help everyone’s autonomy because they will have more purpose for their personal goals.…

In today’s society we have all encountered a numerous amount of people who practice religions that are completely different than our own. Religion is often a topic most people tend to shy away from during social events and interactions. I believe people shy away from this topic because they are afraid to step outside of their comfort zone and become interested in a religion that they were raised to practice. With over half of the United States population claiming Christianity as their religion of choice I believe people feel that it is unimportant to gain knowledge about any other religious beliefs. For me that is not true, although Christianity is leading religion in the US I believe that is important to be knowledgeable about religions that…

For centuries, religion has been a topic of great debate and interest, stemming from the validity of ideals to reasons why people believe in it in the first place. Despite all the efforts over time to thwart religion, it has managed to remain as a prominent structure. One question that seems to always be brought to the table is how religion continues to exist in light of the continual advances of science. The reason religion continues to exist today is not because the furthering of science leads to disproving religion, but rather because religion addresses questions that currently not even the advances of science can answer, giving people a sense of unity and congregation based upon two key emotions: hope and fear.…

Religion teaches people how to use their freedom for the good of themselves and others. It is practically the sole means of counteracting the materialistic aspects of life by taking people’s minds beyond the physical, material aspects of life. Religion teaches men that being good is in their self interest because they will be rewarded in the afterlife. By working towards the common good rather than personal gain, people are forced to work together. Through these features of American democracy which de Tocqueville noted, Americans are able to balance individualism with the good of the community.…

He points out that a decline in religion may be viewed as desirable since “religion is a facet of the unenlightened mind” (Graham 192), the evidence of which he believes to be very clear for two specific reasons. To explain the first, Graham refers to the history of Christianity and how “it has stimulated some of the most undesirable events and institutions of human history, from the ostracism of Jews over the centuries” (Graham 192), the Inquisition, wars and persecutions of nonbelievers or those who posed threat to the church’s traditions. Gordon contends that critics claim “the sort of intolerance, enmity and strife which only religion can generate is to be found still wherever religious enthusiasm persists…not only has Christianity prompted these phenomena, it has constantly provided apologists for those opposed to progressive development” (Graham 192).…

As a young lad growing up, I was raised in a Christian home and taught the ways of the bible. When I moved to Germany, I was exposed to several new religions that I had never encountered before, and these contradicted my prior knowledge of religion. JW von Goethe once said, “we know with confidence only when we know little; with knowledge doubt increases”. Exposure increased my knowledge of other faiths, but this increase also meant more doubts, more questions. For example, how can there be this many religious divisions, despite, there being only one God?…

It is not always evident if those religious beliefs have a positive or negative impact in a person’s life. A person has at least once encountered someone’s testimony about one’s powerful belief and questioned whether it could be that impactful to one’s life. It is very difficult to define who and what a person defines to be a religion and to clearly see what aspects of religion will motivate a person since all individuals have different levels of persuasion.…
