Personal Narrative: My Goals At Work

Improved Essays
I am Molly O’Neil. I am willing to step out of my comfort zone. I am an efficient goal setter. I am a determined student. Finally, I am an achiever. That is why I belong at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. I have many personal examples of how I am a goal setter, a determined student, and a achiever.
Starting with my freshman year through sophomore year I was comfortable with classes and with my after school activities. At the end of my sophomore year, I decided it was time to step outside of my comfort zone. I wanted new challenges inside and outside of school. Therefore I joined band and joined a new sport.
I started off by enrolling in band at the start of my junior year. It was a huge leap for me because I did not know how to play an instrument. I knew very little about music and knew no one in band. But I was determined and had goals. My initial goal for band was to learn the basics of playing a new instrument and eventually to play at a high school level in band. When I first started band in the summer, I had to work very hard to understand the music and learn all of marching band techniques from scratch. I even had a private instructor to further help me understand the this new language of music. Band is both a team effort as much as it is an individual effort. My band performs in front of large groups of people and also I participate in Solo Ensemble. Large or small audience, band helps me to continue stepping out of my comfort zone. My enthusiastic attitude about learning how to achieve to higher levels makes me the perfect person to advance in band and in school. I have succeeded in band and I still perform today in marching and in concert band. I believe my experience in band has prepared for additional challenges. This past year I continued to do new things such as joining a cross country ski team, Bay Nordic. This new sport taught me skills and pushed my limits. Being apart of a new team has been great. I have met many new people and have learned many new cross country skiing skills. The winter sport has taught me so much on the importance of goal setting and has encouraged me to never stop improving. When first starting off at Bay Nordic I wanted to learn how to balance on two wheels on each foot, known as roller skies. Then turn wheels into skis to glide on the snow. But being who I am, I just pushed through the fear and that made me stronger and closer with the team. As the season continued I became faster and stronger. I am proud

Clarence, I agree with you completely that older generations follow the motto “a hard day’s work for an honest day’s pay”. I work with a few older employees and they work 5x harder than some of the younger employees I work with. I also received a 35 on my EI test which I was not surprised of either. I have a very high work ethic and have very little time for play in my job. I do need to learn to put myself in others shoes; sometimes this is very hard for me to do.…

I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

As a result of continuous practice and persistence, I became the principal player in my freshman band. Before entering high school band, notwithstanding the effort, I faced financial challenges. My family could not afford a trombone or pay for band to let me continue my dreams. But I did not surrender hope, and asked my band teacher for help while my parents sought aids from my relatives. Fortunately, I could purchase a student model instrument at a cheap price and continue to play in high school.…

Joining theater fit my schedule well, introduced me to new people, and opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before. The time I wasted in marching band was grueling.…

There are several experiences in my life where I have felt that I was treated in an unfair manner, but the most recent of those experiences is the one that occurred to me only months prior to this application. Up until the beginning of November of this year, I used to believe that being a great and successful student would be the most rewarding accomplishment of my senior high career. As a result of this, I unwisely assumed that the most important thing in my life was how well I could do on the next test. I spent a meager amount of my time involved in anything else aside from my homework or studying; expecting to be fairly remunerated for a majority of my hard work. Earlier this year, I was indeed rewarded with an application to National Honors…

The idea of being told that I had to work for the first time made me want to eat glass; but could it possibly have turned out for the better? In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. ' Work Experience' is when you work just like you would if you were legally an adult except with this program it only lasts a week. After 2 weeks of tireless searching I landed a job at Ariya Capital; an experienced developer and investor in clean energy and infrastructure projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was actually much more advanced than any job I ever thought of getting.…
