The problems created by the Soviet Union will prove that the era of the Berlin Wall was indeed problematic for people from many different areas. There were several different pros of the wall in East Berlin under the communist system. People had excellent health care and free public transport. All the people enjoyed full employment, food and rents. East Germans believed that the communism was fairer than the capitalism of West Germany. However they did lack some key freedoms including the freedom of speech, the ability to vote. The wall also prevented people of East Germany to leave and many families were unable to access luxurious goods such coffee. People were unable to get the best imported goods since it was difficult to bring into the area.This made things difficult such as getting good, proper food. People had to wait a long time in a long line to be served bread. Many families, friends and loved ones were divided off due to the Berlin wall. People who were caught on opposite sides of the wall lost their jobs and due to that they were not able to provide for their families. Many people protested against it, but it did not have an affect. The other option was to cross over the Wall. But the wall was 155 kilometers long with a total of 203 military towers. Even with that many people still tried to cross over to escape but were killed before they could. In total about 5,000 people are thought to have escaped East Germany by crossing the wall, and 1,300 or more were just guards. There are several tales of the daring escapes that were noticed by Western media. Some of these people were Horst Klein, Hans Strelczyk and Gunter Weltzer. Horst Klein, an acrobat, who dangled off an unused cable as he made his way over to the West side inch by inch. The famous of all the escapes were Hans Strelczyk and Gunter Weltzer. They both constructed a hot air balloon that they used to fly themselves over the wall in 1979. There was only one group of Berliners that could cross without risking their lives.
