Though the story of Pentheus seemed to come to an end, the story of Pentheus and the people
of Thebes had only just begun. When Dionysus had turned the image of Pentheus to a
mountain lion, the creature had acquired the ability to grow; as Dionysus had once taught the
people to grow the vine. From each limb Agave and the followers of Dionysus had wretched,
grew a mountain lion. One for Pentheus’ torso, tail, left arm, right arm, left leg right leg, and
head. Thus Pentheus lived on through the head of the lion his mother had once

Pentheus and his army of mountain lions began to attack the town of Thebes. The bodies of
people affected by the wrath of the lions littered the streets like trash. Dionysus was aghast at
the death of his people, but could not break his cover and ruin his plan of revenge on Pentheus.
Bitter at his own mother for killing and triumphantly returning home with the head of her son,
Pentheus ventured to find his mother and seek revenge. He could remember exactly what
happened that fateful day. “But the frantic priestess of Bacchus foamed at the mouth and
stared at him with wide-open eyes. And what she saw was not her son but a mountain lion, and
gripping his right shoulder she tore out his arm. Her sisters wrested out his left, and then the
whole raging band closed upon him, each seizing some part of his body until he was wrenched
