Why Am I Interested In College

From a young age, I have always been interested in economics. I have always believed that there are two universal languages in the world, economics and mathematics, and by understanding both, one can truly understand the problems and solutions of our world.
When I was in 9th grade, I stumbled upon a website called Coursera, which offers online college classes to gain knowledge about a variety of topics. The course structures and content made me believe that I had hit the jackpot! Why bother going to college if the classes were online for free? Curious about this potentially life-changing opportunity, I joined a course that interested me called, “An Introduction to Corporate Finance,” taught by Dr. Franklin Allen of the Wharton School of Business.

One of my favorite extracurricular activities that I have been in throughout high school was Speech and Debate. Our organization would attend Model Congress competitions held by Princeton University and University of Pennsylvania and debate in a congressional-like setting. I enjoyed meeting people from across the country (some of whom I am still friends with despite being hundreds of miles apart), as well as debating about bills and ideas that could improve our society. Meeting with professionals from organizations such as the Foreign Policy Initiative, as well as listening to congressmen speak about their time in the Senate or the House, was an enlightening …show more content…
If I could have the opportunity to be in the position that dozens before me have been in, it would be a dream come true. Helping to run the Model UN would be an amazing experience, and I would be able to learn about the countless number of global events that occur each day. This would help me in my ultimate objective in life: to reduce poverty worldwide.
