Conflict theory is based on works of Marx and Engels (White, 2008). It based on the idea that the family is a social organization and it will work in a family’s own self interest (White, 2008). The families choice of distribution of resources is determined by the family, the self-interest of the family my not align with what other families may do with the same resources. The family my have an high emphasis on education and push resources toward that endeavor or perhaps to own their own business, whatever the family chooses should be respected. Another is procreation, the families ideals toward family or extended family should unique and their own. There view of children and where and when individual family members have children is also unique to the individual family. And finally the social structure of the family should be respected, this can extend to the families culture of caring for children, elderly or even something as simple as who cooks dinner. All these components of the conflict model are respected within the Whitaker theory, no efforts are made to change these element, they are respected and family therapy work in done within those confines.
