The English colonists wanted nothing to do with the Natives, because of this, they built a fence around their settlement to keep the Natives and animals out. They viewed the Natives as savages who were just as wild as animals, they believed the Natives had no rights and that they could take whatever they wanted from them. The colonists who came to the New World were gentlemen in search of gold and riches. They did not hunt, fish, or farm, so when winter came around they had no food; 400 people died. A group of Natives, called the Powhatan´s, agreed to help the colonists grow crops and hunt in exchange for steel, however, they stopped helping the colonists after a year. The Natives and the English colonists lived peacefully for 40 years, however, when the father and the brother of the Powhatan’s king, Metacom, died, the Puritans and the Natives began to fight again. The Puritans sold Metacom’s wife and son into slavery, which caused Metacom to convince other tribes to join together and attack Puritan towns. Metacom eventually is caught by the Puritans, beheaded, and had his head paraded around the towns on a steak.
