Similar to the red and black chip model that we learned in class, the students here used green and red chips to show negative and positive numbers. This was helpful for students to be able to see positive and negative numbers in a different way, instead of just seeing the negative and positive signs. It was also helpful for students to be able to write either positive or negative in the orange circle, that way they would not forget later. This idea was helpful because the students were able to focus on the math itself, instead of having to worry about positive and negative signs. This video had a lot of good ideas, but there was just one major weaknesses that I saw. The weakness is, students would have to have some sort of understanding with how integers work before they do this. The reason is because they would already have to know what a negative and positive number are. If students don’t already know which way on the number line is positive and which way is negative, it would be hard for them to grasp the concept of the color dots, in regards to the number …show more content…
When we were learning how to add and subtract integers, we were using things like the chip model, charged field model, and the number line model. During the video the teacher combined the ideas from all of these models, to make one model that the students could easily understand. When comparing it to the chip model, we can see that instead of black and red, the teacher used green and red to show negative and positive. When comparing this idea to the charged field model, we can see that instead of using just negative and positive signs, the teacher combined this idea with the colors of the circles, and the orange circle, when it comes to showing whether something is positive or negative for the final answer. Lastly, then comping it to the number line model, we can see that the teacher used this idea of a number line, but she only used this idea to help show the students which direction negative and positive was. This video had very similar concepts to the ones we learned in class, but this teacher was able to help her students by combining all the models
