What is known is the shooter had significant mental health issues that affected his ability to live a normal life, as well as the ability to interact with others. What contribution this made to the shooting, if any at all, is unknown because mental health professionals who saw him did not see anything that would have indicated this future behaviour. However, a teacher told investigators that “In all my years of experience, I have known (redacted) grade boys to talk about things like this, but Adam’s level of violence was disturbing.” The teacher added “Adam’s creative writing was so graphic that it could not be shared”. A big topic up for debate in the United States is gun control. A question that is often asked is, should there be more restrictions on the process of buying a gun? While some say there is a need to require stricter background checks or psychological testing others would argue that it is our right as Americans to own firearms. Gun control in the United States has become too restricting to serve its original purpose. The second amendment of our country’s Constitution states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”…

Omar Mateen, Dylann Roof, John Houser, Syed Rizwan Farook, Christopher Harper-Mercer and Aaron Alexis are just a few names of mass murderers who obtained guns legally in the United States. The Virginia Tech massacre sparked the idea of gun control. It has been a controversial issue in American politics ever since, yet Congress refuses to strengthen restrictive gun control laws. Although background checks have prevented 2.8 million gun sales to unqualified purchasers since the enactment of the Brady Bill in 1994, guns still sneak their ways into the hands of the deranged. Each year in the United States, the number of people killed by guns increases, with nearly 13,000 killed in 2015 alone.…

Americans love guns and Americans hate guns. There is a perplexing relationship within the American people and their desire for guns. American citizens are aware of the danger that follows with gun use, but still advocate to keep them legal within the states. The gruesome massacres that have occurred within American schools such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, as well as the massacre that recently occurred in Orlando, Florida at club Pulse, somehow do not resonate with the fact that this country has a very serious gun problem. The United States must figure out logical ways to make access to guns harder such as disallowing someone who has been on a FBI watch list from ever purchasing weapons.…

As the country with the largest stockpile of privately owned firearms, we aren’t doing much to prevent them from falling on the wrong hands. According to The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act convicted felons, drug users and abusers, and mentally ill people are prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms (FBI). But, convicted criminals and mentally ill people are acquiring firearms without any difficulty and are using them for the wrong reasons mainly because of weak laws that regulate the sale of firearms. Firearm sales in gun shows are not regulated by the FBI and buyers are not required to go through any kind of background checks at the time of purchase. According to a report by the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program titled “Inside Gun Shows: What Goes on When Everybody Thinks Nobody’s Watching”, it is reported that more than forty percent of gun sales occur privately without any regulations.…
