The first heroic characteristic that beowulf had was that he was on a quest. The evil guy who attacked the town was Grendel. With the battle vs Grendel the quest was for Beowulf to defeat Grendel and save the town. It was a very fierce battle lines (601-604)“they wrestled, she ripped and tore and clawed at him, bit holes in his helmet, and that too failed him; for the first time in years of being worn to war it would earn no glory.”After that battle Grendel's mother attacked and killed one of Beowulf's friends, so Beowulf's next quest was to fight and defeat Grendel's mother. Then they had one more enemy, the dragon, which Beowulf also had to defeat. On pages 490-510 when Beowulf went to go fight Grendel it took lots of courage and bravery. With the battle vs Grendel's mother Beowulf had to go to her actual den, and the poem talks about how dark and evil it was to get to the den on lines(545-550). “They live in secret places, windy Cliffs, wolf-dens where water pours from the rocks, then runs underground, where mist steams like black clouds, and the groves of trees.” Beowulf had to be brave to go to her den to get his revenge.
