After the monster strangles poor William to death, Victor feels a sense of responsibility for his actions, this can be inferred when Victor says “I, not in deed, but in effect, was the true murderer” (Shelley 63). This quote fully demonstrates the monstrosity in Victor’s character because it shows him admitting that he is a murderer, and by the tone of voice which we read his thoughts in, he does not seem to have much guilt in knowing the fact. Speaking generally, someone who kills someone else, directly or not, and really cares about the situation, will do everything they can to make things right, but Victor holds his own interests over those of others and lets Justine die because of it. This action is actually quite pitiful, Victor is willing to see someone he has grown up and lived with for practically his entire life die because he is too worried about his own security, so much so that he won’t even speak up in a trial which could (and does) result in Justine’s execution. Victor’s monstrosity is also demonstrated just before Justine’s trial, when everyone is explaining why the evidence proves Justine guilty, Victor says “You are all mistaken; I know the murderer.…

We think story-telling played a role in character development for Victor. In the short story, more light is shown on Victor and Thomas’s relationship when they were younger through flashbacks. With these flashbacks we understand why the characters are the way they are now in the present. We see less anger and hostility from Victor as his older self towards Thomas in the short story. We can also infer that maybe this is a growing respect for Thomas from Victor, due to Thomas’s way of being able to remain positive despite his struggles.…

One of the most prevalent editing techniques within the movie were flashbacks to Victor’s childhood. The many flashbacks that were seamlessly integrated into the plotline provided background for why Victor grew up the way he did. For example, when Victor and Thomas were eating at a restaurant, Thomas recalled a story when Arnold Joseph invited him to eat breakfast at Denny’s. As Thomas told his story, Victor only recalled the day his dad had left his family. He remembered throwing beer bottles at his dad’s truck, his mom arguing with his dad, his dad throwing his mother to the floor, and his dad taking off in his yellow truck.…

He isolated himself from his family for years because he only cared for his experiments. When Justine was wrongfully accused and charged with Victor’s brother’s murder, he could have spoke up and saved her but he was more worried about himself. He was more concerned what people would think of him creating such an abomination. “My tale was not one to announce publicly; its astounding horror would be looked upon as madness by the vulgar” (Shelly44). Victor shows in this quote how self absorbed he truly is.…

As Victor states on page 40, “I need not describe the feelings of those whose dearest ties are rent by that most irreparable evil, the void that presents itself to the soul, and the despair that is exhibited on the countenance.” Victor’s focus after the event is on the rending of his dearest ties- the upset of his life and the lack of ability to change it. After this traumatic event, Victor falls down a path of emotional detachment and despair- and thus the cruelties of life in turn inspire him to perform his own acts of cruelty. Another act of cruelty that influenced Victor’s ideas and actions was during his studies at the University. This is most concisely expressed by this quote by Mr. Krempe on page 43, “ ‘Every minute,’ continued M. Krempe with warmth, ‘every instant that you have wasted on those books is utterly and entirely lost.…

In a story, the character that receives the most focus is more than likely one that attempts to surpass the achievements that are expected of them or those of their peers. However, there is also a problem or a conflict that goes along with that role. One who carries the main role usually has a set mindset or a goal that they wish to fulfill throughout the course of the novel. Mary Shelley’s, “Frankenstein” is one to hold true to these values that a story withholds. Victor Frankenstein plays the main role and was always very curious about the world around him.…
