The purpose of Westby’s tutorial was to provide a guideline of how utilizing the International Classification of function, disability and health, otherwise known as ICF, is useful in assessing and treating children with language impairments. ICF establishes a standard to gauge a child’s functional capabilities. By using ICF the SLP has resources to identify various factors which has an effect on the child’s capability and performance. ICF focuses on the functional state of the child whereas the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is more concerned with the diagnosis and health condition of the child. By incorporating both ICF and ICD, a comprehensive outlook of the child will be provided. In 2004, ASHA implemented the ICF as a best practice for Speech Language Pathologist. “The WHO defines ‘health’ as the complete state of physical, mental, and social functioning/well-being of a person and not merely the absence of disease” (p. 138). I selected this quote because I thought it was fascinating how health was not always viewed as the overall wellbeing but by whether the body is affected with disease. This shifted the focus of the etiology and consequences of a disease to the functional state of the body. This shift aligns with the overall focus of function in the ICP.
