Some examples of this being better pacemakers, cordless power tools, and the technology used in wireless Bluetooth headsets (Wilson, 2011). The change in our society as a result of NASA developments is immeasurable but at the same time almost unrecognizable. Who knows what future technologies we may be delaying by not investing now, possible cancer treatments or a new materials with high industrial application. Opponents of NASA budget increases argue that “…NASA is a money wasting machine that brings nothing in return” (DeGroot, 2009). Yet almost everything throughout modern civilization has been changed or improved upon by NASA in some way or form. The advancements in the fields of research and technology as a result of NASA are paralleled by only the U.S. military. Equipment used by NASA such as the Hubble Space Telescope continues to significantly enlighten our species' understanding of our origins from the dawn of existence to the development of life, and there is still so much more to learn. Almost all electronics, materials, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, chemistry, satellites, transportation, and resource allocation have been either created or improved upon because of NASA accomplishments (Wilson, 2011). What we have to consider is the money saved by these cuts worth the loss of potential knowledge that may improve or …show more content…
Humans must face the inevitable fact that one day the Earth will either become overpopulated or fail to produce the quantity of resources required to sustain the population. On the Earth, us humans remain very limited to what we can accomplish and create by the resources available within the planet's geosphere. Already, the price of precious metals such as gold, platinum, and uranium skyrocket because of their very low supply and very high demand. In the distant future, many of the resources we are currently accustomed to being so abundant will become just as scarce. Even through endeavors to conserve the use of Earth's resources, we are still limited by increasing scarcity and inevitably depletion. For our species to overcome this obstacle, we must evolve in to a space-faring civilization. In space we would no longer have to worry about damaging ecosystems to mine materials since we would have the material resource of every body in the solar system. As a space-faring society, we would be able to utilize space and other celestial bodies for the generation of energy. This would be beneficial because there is no ecosystem to damage and the capability to utilize far more powerful energy sources. One day, the human population will grow to a point where the allocation of infrastructure across the planet's surface will become problematic as the natural biosphere is lost to the anthroposphere. This could cause serious problems as humans will be
