What Is The Knee Joint?

Improved Essays
The knee joint is classified as a type of synovial joint, which is one of the most common and complex joints found in the human body. The knee is a meeting point for the femur, fibula, tibia, and the patella. In order to maintain its flexibility and function, several other ligaments join the knee joint in order to keep the attaching bones in place.

The knee is the joint where the femur and the tibia meet; the patella (kneecap) is made of bone and sits in front of the knee. The knee joint is a synovial joint are enclosed by a ligament capsule and contain fluid called synovial fluid that lubricate the joint.

The end of the femur joins the top of the tibia to create the knee joint. 2 rounds knobs called femoral condyles are found on the end

The anatomical structure that stabilizes the knee can be divided into 4 areas. Anterior, Posterior, Lateral or Medial. These structures enable the joint to move, while also providing stabilisation and support, offered to not only the knee, but also other muscles and tendons around it. Anterior Compartment:…

Holding these bones together and providing movement and stability are the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), the medial collateral ligament (MCL), the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) (“Knee Anatomy”). The top of the tibia is also covered by menisci acting mainly as shock absorbers (“Knee Anatomy”). As Cowl turned sharply to avoid being tackled, he felt a pop in his right knee. Following Cowl’s injury, an anterior drawer test, a Lachman test, and a pivot shift test were all performed. Through these tests, the trainer confirmed his suspicion of an ACL tear to the right knee.…

4). The Mayo Clinic further indicates that the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of two ligaments that cross in the middle of the knee and serves to connect the femur to the tibia which in turn helps to stabilize the knee joint. ACL injuries occur often during sports when there are sudden stops or changes in direction (Mayo Clinic, 2014). Such a change in direction could have occurred when Margie was in the player pile-up. In addition, many people hear a “pop” in their knee when an ACL injury occurs along with knee swelling and a knee which is too painful to bear weight (Mayo Clinic,…

    Cruciate Ligament Case

Case Study #3 With the given information about the blow to the tibial tuberosity causing displacement of the tibia posteriorly relative to the femur, the structure most likely injured is the posterior cruciate ligament because it is located on the posterior side of the patella and posterior displacement of the tibia on fixed femur is restricted by the posterior cruciate ligament. The posterior cruciate ligament is the strongest ligament in the knee joint and helps with stability. Once the posterior cruciate ligament is torn or stretched, it loses its stability. There are many ligaments that make up the knee joint, also known as a hinge type joint which perform tasks such as flexion and extension. The tibiofemoral and patellofemoral are joints of the knee which aid in flexion and extension of the knee.…

The Bad Knee As I see the ball flying up in the Monticello Trails gym, I knew I could catch it and get the other team out. Once I try to jump up to get it, my feet don’t even leave the ground before I feel a horrible pain in left knee. A terrible pain I hoped never to feel again. Dislocation is the displacement of one or more bones at a joint according to the Merriam Dictionary. Dislocation feels like someone ripping one of your extremities off.…

The structure most likely injured with the direct blow of the tibial tuberosity resulting in presentation of the lower limb (figure 1) would be the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The presented picture shows the tibia being pushed back posteriorly. The PCL, within the knee joint, prevents posterior translation of the tibia bone related to the femur bone (Moore et., al, 2014). If the PCL is torn, then the tibia can move backward too much leading to instability of the knee. The knee joint serves as a hinge joint that connects the femur to the tibia allowing for flexion, extension, and minimal internal/external rotation.…

As a complex and energetically used joint, the knee is highly prone to suffering painful injuries and developing severe knee conditions. The constant pressure that is put on the knee during the physical activities on a daily basis, wears the knee out and is one of the major causes for multiple knee conditions or injuries at once. Lionel Perales visited Manhattan Orthopedic Care because of an agonizing pain in his knees. During the initial appointment, Dr. Armin Tehrany thoroughly examined Lionel’s knees and diagnosed him with meniscus tears and chondromalacia of patella. Since his both knees were in a bad shape, Dr. Tehrany recommended proceeding with a knee surgery that will address all problems at once.…

The Injury The ACL or Anterior Cruciate Ligament attaches from the front of the tibia to the back of the femur. It is an important ligament in which keeps the tibia from sliding too far forward in relation to the femur bone and provides stability to the knee joint in sagittal plane movements. Injuries to the ACL are very common in individuals who have the knee in an awkward position such as stopping suddenly while jogging or sprinting, a rapid change in direction, and an abnormal landing stance that leaves the knee joint locked. Your ACL can be injured if your knee joint is bent backward, twisted, or bent side to side.…

The posterior cruciate ligament(PCL) is one of, if not, the strongest ligament in the knee and often described as the “primary stabilizer of the knee”(emedicine, Charles S Peterson, MD). While this is not one of the more common of the 4 stabilizing knee ligaments, it serves a great purpose. The posterior cruciate ligament is twice as strong and twice as thick than it’s “sister” anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The PCL is extends from the lateral surface of the medial femoral condyle to the posterior aspect of the tibia. The term cruciate translates to “criss cross” which describes the PCL and ACL.…

For this year's 7th grade science fair I will be working with the engineering method. The reason why I will be working with the engineering method is because I would like to help people. I will be constructing a special piece of equipment for athletes to reduce the cause of an injured ligament in the knee and to not hinder the athletes game. I will be creating a knee brace that is stitched to the inside of compression pants. The brace will give more mobility because it won't be as big and bulky like a regular knee brace would be.…

ACL injuries are of the most intriguing sports injuries today due to their causes, recovery path, prevention methods, and how the injury has progressed in technology. The ACL is the center of much responsibility when it comes to the knee. The ACL runs across the knee joint, and keeps the shin from sliding forward, and provides stability when performing rotational movements. It is one of the many ligaments that holds the knee joint in place, and keeps the knee from buckling.…

Backwards Marching Backwards marching is a marching command in which one lifts up on their toes and walks backwards in a gliding motion without their heels touching the ground. This movement focuses on the lower half of the body, primarily using the joints in the hips, and the knees, and ankles in both legs. These joints, along with the help from many muscles, allow the necessary movements to be performed, such as plantar flexion, extension, and flexion, in order to execute backwards marching properly During the process of backwards marching, one lifts onto their toes in a fluid motion, this requires the use of the ankle joints. The ankle joint, also known as the Talocrural, is located in between the Talus, tibia, and fibula creating a type of synovial joint called a hinge joint.…

Nobody wants to get injured, unless you hate the sport, but it’s guaranteed that a few weeks can be missed through an athletic career due to injuries. However, there is always one injury that athletes fear more than any other, and that is surgery to fix any torn ligaments in your knee. My freshman year of high school, I was the unlucky soul that suffered a torn ACL and Meniscus in my left knee.…
