The main focus of discussion for each chapter is the history of the prison, its effectiveness in running, its social context in modern day America, and the authors of the chapter’s personal thoughts on the importance of that specific prison type. Crime Control As Industry: Towards Gulags, Western Style by Nils Christie, a professor of Criminology at the University of Oslo, is somehow a ground-breaking book to the extent that it argues that ‘’crime control, rather than crime itself is the existent danger for our future’’ and that systems of crime control have the potential for developing western style Gulags, or concentration camps (p.15) Crime Control as Industry is divided into 13 chapters each of those filled with very concrete and heavily revised amounts of data which try to explains us the readers how managing crime has turned into a reasonably big industry; “the crime control industry” and how it will continue to grow because unlike most industries there is “no lack of raw-material” as crime is in endless supply. But it goes further into my interpretation as Nils Christie also suggests that the increased prison populations, especially in the United States characterise a move ‘’towards Gulag’s western style’’. Christie argues that the fundamental problems of this threat are the unequal distribution of wealth and the lack of access to paid work. In this third edition the author does a quite memorable job as he documents the enormous growth in the number of prisoners in recent years by giving us a global perspective to incarceration and by comparing how unequal imprisonment rates between likely European countries are.…

The Eighth Amendment is the Amendment under the Bill of Rights I feel is most important with regards to the rights of incarcerated individuals. The Eight Amendment states that each detainee has the privilege to be free under the Eighth Amendment from uncaring treatment or anything that could be viewed as "savage and irregular" discipline. Shockingly, the Eighth Amendment did not plainly characterize what "cold blooded and irregular" discipline incorporates, which means a significant part of the definition has come from case law. As a rule, any discipline that is viewed as unfeeling treatment, similar to torment or manhandle, or an infringement of a man's fundamental nobility may be viewed as cold blooded and uncommon inside of the court's caution. A few specifics covered under the Eighth Amendment are detainees rights to be free of segregation, lewd behavior or Sex crimes, the right to complain about prison conditions and access to the courts, sensible housing for handicapped detainees and the same access to offices as non-handicapped detainees, restorative and mental health care and…

Kerman (2011) presents a female perspective within a primarily patriarchal authoritarian system of female corrections in her first-person experiences at Danbury Federal Correction institution. Kerman (2011) utilizes a female point of view to define the authoritative role of male guards, which often leads to sexual abuse, physical violence, and the use of hostile language to coerce women prisoners. These findings suggest a broader pattern in…
