Personal Narrative: My Trip To A Drag Show At Rick's Cafe

Improved Essays
On Sunday, September 27, 2015 around 7:00pm, my life was changed. That Sunday, I went to a Drag Show at Rick’s Café. It was such amazing experience for me. I have never seen a drag show before, but always wanted to see one. I was really excited when I saw a posting about it in MSU Spectrum Facebook group. Also, my friend told me about it, and he really wanted to go to the show but not by himself. Of course, I was game to go to the show with him. When I walked into Rick’s Café, it seemed like the same old Rick’s, but the tables were organized more for a show. My friends and I got good seats after I made them move multiple times because I wanted the best view of the stage. The show started a little late, but it was worth the way. The MC for the show came out and did the normal crowd warm up. Also, he announced that Miss Gay America would be making an appearance at the show. He made a few jokes about the show running a little bit late saying that magic was happening in the back. The MC made me even more excited for the show. Also, before the MC came out, I saw a few of the drag queens socializing with the people in the audience. They looked amazing and just like women. It amazed me that a man could make himself look just like a women. When the first queen came out I was amazed, she was apparently a Beyoncé impersonator. She was wearing a black glitter body suit and black heels, and she was dancing and lip singing to Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” and “Flawless”. I was amazed by her stage presence and how much like a woman she looked. Her hair, make up, and body looked perfect, better than anything I could hope to look like. It also was her first show which amazed me because she had the stage presence of a veteran, professional drag queen to me. The next few queens were also phenomenal. The danced and lip sync to what I would categorize as typical girl anthems and top pop songs. They also came out into the crowd and danced and sung to people. People were going up to the drag queens. After the next few queens, the MC came out announced a drag king, a girl who dresses like a boy and performs. I did not know such a thing existed. He came out rapping Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” in a Robin costume. It was hilarious because he had so much energy with it. He looked just like a boy, like a teenage boy but a boy none the less. He was very entertaining. A few more drag queens performed, and they all were fabulous. I was just in awe of how feminine all the queens were. During most of the show, I forgot they were not biologically women. Although most were amazing, a few contouring was bad, some of them did not blend their make up well. Also, some of them had too big of butt pads or boobs, but I think some did it on purpose to seem funnier. Another drag king performed, but he performed with the first queen. She changed into a full length, formal, sparkly dress and sparkly heels. She was beautiful. The drag king and drag queen did a duet. The duet was one of my favorite songs, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert “Same Love”. I got a little emotional during this song because it is just an emotional song to me, and I was …show more content…
I have always heard gay males do not like lesbians, and vice versa, but everyone seemed to be just enjoying themselves. While I was at the drag show, I talked to this guy that was gay. It was really nice talking to him, and hearing his story about finding himself. I will not put his name in this paper because he is all the way out the closet. Also, to touch on that subject, the community is big on not outing others who are not yet ready to come out of the closet. The group of guys my friends and I were sitting next to talked to us about the regulars that come to the shows. They were a little gossipy but real

The three books that came to mind was: Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity written by Drew Brees, Friday Night Lights written by Buzz Bissinger, and the last one was Through My Eyes: A Quarterback’s Journey written by Tim Tebow.…

One of my roommates in college was gay. He confided in me about his sexual preference, knowing I’d respect his confidence. Back then, gay people were openly ridiculed and rejected and attacked. I wish I could say this was no longer true, but obviously I can’t. We’ve come a long way, but what happened in Orlando and the reaction to it provide harsh reminders of how people hate those who are different from them in some way.…

When I first realized I was gay, it did not seem like a big difference. Some exciting stuff happened, like gay marriage becoming legal and meeting a group of friends who were also part of the lgbtq community. As time went on I trended towards music, art, literature, almost anything as long as I felt accepted or represented. I became more political as it became clear that more people than I could have imagined would like to take away my basic rights or the rights of those in my community. I could not understand how others were not keeping up in the realm of politics, why they were not as loud as me when it came to the same issues.…
