One point in Malcolm Gladwell’s book that stood out to me was when he talked about the artist in Paris in 1860 and how they didn’t conform, which I think you shouldn’t. He quoted historian Sue Roe when she wrote, “works were expected to be microscopically accurate, properly ‘finished’ and formally framed, with proper perspective and all the familiar artistic conventions (pg. 66),” but the artists he wrote about didn’t follow those rules. His book is about underdogs but, when he wrote about the artists and how they were painting different than what was liked back then, I thought it was more about how the underdogs of the time didn’t conform to society. He wrote, “the Impressionists had an entirely different idea about what constituted art.…
Conformity The word conformity could be described as simply “following the rules.” Many believe that conformity is known to be a terrible and dangerous idea. It is recommended that an individual stay with they way they feel instead of where they are.…
Further analysis will demonstrate the ways in which conforming to the conventions of society can have damaging effects by limiting the individual thoughts of people and their happiness. Society’s behavior is guided by a powerful set of unwritten rules. Those that act outside of the rules receive ridicule, criticism, or rejection. The main driving force which draws people to conform is their desire to feel accepted. In order to feel accepted, people often conform however, “When you adopt the standards and values of someone else, you surrender your own integrity [and] become, to the extent of your surrender, less of a human being”- Eleanor Roosevelt.…
Society trusts those that conform, and distrusts those that that don’t. By conforming to society's expectation, you gain trust from the society. A disadvantage to conforming to society is when you join the group, you’re technically no longer your own individual. George S. Patton once said, “If everyone is thinking alike, then sobody isn’t thinking.” It’s like you’re a sheep, and when you conform to society's beliefs, you join the rest of the herd.…
Is nonconformity another way of conforming? Nonconformity, by definition, is the "failure or refusal to conform, as with established customs, attitudes, or ideas". An accurate way to measure conformity or nonconformity is based mainly on a person's true grasp on a subject. Conformity is not just about following the masses. Booker T. Washington, an African-American educator once stated, “in America, through pressure of conformity, there is freedom of choice, but nothing to choose from.” In other words, the world gives infinite choices to make but yet, we decide to make the choices society prefers us to make. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man” Tom Leppard made the wise decision to make the choices he desired to perform instead of conforming. According to dictionary definition, social conformity can be defined as an agreement between an individual's behavior and a group's standards or expectations. One should not change their looks, beliefs, or behavior to fit in with society because it destroys one’s uniqueness and humans are naturally meant to be themselves.…
“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth”John F. Kennedy once said. Meaning that it puts limits to a person’s success not allowing them to go further. People Conform to many things such as to fit in a group but what they are doing is destroying their individualism. The meaing of being human is to be unique and to be different from the crowd. Conformity causes people to lose their individuality and it also stops someone from growing.…

Humans are social creatures. It is clear from any study of sociology, history, or basically any other discipline regarding or involving the human race that humans have a tendency toward grouping up. With the idea of the group comes the opposing ideals of conformity and nonconformity. There are as many stances on the virtues of either side as there are people involved in the study. Some would tout conformity as an ideal; a staple of a stable, peaceful, efficient community.…

CHAPTER TWO: THE POWER OF INDIVIDUAL EFFORT. Individual efforts translate into the collective power of the People Observing our behaviour as a society it is easy to suggest that the majority rather than the minority is most guilty of practicing greed. We must not be greedy in our interactions with others just because it may be the practice of the majority. Being greedy may eventually be counter productive to improving quality of life at least for society as a whole. That is why the Poor out numbers the Rich.…
