The poem “Mother to Son” written by Langston Hughes and published in 1922 is a very inspiring poem of a mother speaking to her son about not giving up. The mother speaks about life’s hardships and encourages her son to keep going and to not give up. There are many different words and phrases that the mother uses to symbolize certain parts of her life and specific things she has gone through during her life. I really like this poem because of the love and wisdom this mother is sharing with her son through encouraging him through life and sharing her wisdom with him through her own experiences she has had in life.

One of the senses used in this poem is hearing, when they mother is speaking to her son he is listening and hearing her voice, wisdom and love. Also the way she explains her hardships and perseverance you would use the senses of seeing and touching. Seeing because you have to imagine and see the metaphors she uses, such as, walking through a dark place, climbing, and turning corners. Also with touch you have to imagine the pricks of the splinters and tacks she speaks about when she talks about her past and also when she speaks of climbing.
I believe the writer of this poem had gone through something similar to the son in this poem. The writer speaks with such emotion through this poem that someone with no experience with rough times could express so well in writing. The tone of this poem is serious, with much emotion, and very impactful.
I really enjoyed this poem because I can relate to it very well. I can relate to both characters. I have been where the son is where I have been seeking for encouragement and advice and, most of all, just someone to show love to me in my difficult times. I have also been in the mother’s position as well where I have had to show love and encouragement to someone going through a difficult time. Sometimes it is difficult to encourage people without making them feel worse when they are going through very tough times, but, just as the mother demonstrates in this poem, if you encourage them through love and compassion
