Reflective Study In Social Class

There is no doubt that racism, classism, and prejudice, amongst other injustices persist within our social structure, but we often tend to ignore the more prominent issue within the spectrum, which includes women’s rights. Whether it’s a matter of simple gender roles or excruciating violence with her domestic partner, women around the world continuously experience the hardships of being born a woman. Prior to enrolling in my Women Studies course, I would have never thought about half the issues that are so clearly gender specific. It was my newly obtained knowledge and curiosity that led me to a new way of thinking as I learned about one of the most important women in my life. I interviewed my mom on how it was like to grow up as a woman in Mexico (her place of birth). To my surprise my mom’s generation was extremely different from mine. Women in her society were seen as the caretakers, the housewives, and nothing more than just objects. For instance I learned that her household consisted of seven children including her, and her two parents. Out of the seven children, only two were boys and when it came to gender roles girls had to do the cooking, cleaning and any other domestic labor that was necessary. I could only be horrified by what might await me in the future. I don’t think I can relate much to her life but in a sense I could relate to gender roles. In my opinion gender roles persist in my culture and even more so in my family. In my household, the girls are in charge of cleaning the house and buying the groceries because it is seen as the feminine thing to do. I personally disagree with this because honestly, I want to be married one day and be seen as a wife not as a maid my husband married simply to feed him and clean the house for him, but unfortunately, as of now I don’t believe there is a way out of
