What I Learned To Improve My Writing Class

Improved Essays
My writing skills are not the best. I did not write a lot of essays in high school, and when I did I only wrote them a certain style. Entering English in college, I expected to become a better writer, but instead I learned how to write different styles from reading other writers’ essays. This semester in Dr. Meyer’s class I wrote and read a lot. Dr. Meyer made the whole class read different readings every day. I learned new things from the different readings. The readings made me think about how to improve my writings skills. These readings included different types of writing such as persuasive, personal, and informational. The readings I read did help me improve my writing. I had to write essays similar to some readings such as my identity paper. Reading the works of others gave me more of insight of how writing is supposed to be. I want to be an all-around writer instead of just knowing one style of writing really well. I feel reading these essays every day, and learning about the different styles of writing helped me get a wider array of knowledge. I will need to use what I learned this semester for next semester as well. Next semester will be even more reading and …show more content…
It made me think faster and just write instead of thinking what to write. Free writing made writing come easier to me instead of struggling what to write. Before free writing, when I started an essay I just stared at my computer screen for the longest time. Now as a writer I feel I can write an essay a lot quicker now. The free writes were mostly about the readings we read in class. I had to use summarization, analyzation and other thought processes to write the free writes. I will have to use these skills in all areas of writing such as lab reports and other essays. I still do not think my writing is as good as it can be. Over time, with practice my writing can improve. In the future, I know I will always be writing about

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

Writing has always been one of my weakest skills. I never understood the basics of grammar, such as punctuation, verbs, or compound sentences. However, I learned to improve by challenging myself with the essays I am including in my writing portfolio. They have taught me to use my time more wisely in order to develop effective papers. Furthermore, they helped me better myself every day by working hard and seeing a different side of writing papers.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

I chose to revise the first and forth essay. I chose these because they are the shortest essays. I know you wanted me to revise my research essay because I did not have parenthetical citations, but during my writing center visit I asked about those and I learned where they should be and how they should look. When I revised my papers I tried to think about the questions someone else who is not familiar with the topics would ask about my papers and I answered them.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

When asked to write about and describe myself I often have to stop and ask myself how would someone who knows me, describe me to someone who doesn’t know me at all. I feel unique would probably be the most fitting adjective for describing Robert Yamane. I enjoy being challenged and never walk away from a problem that I know I can solve. Puzzles are great examples, but more importantly I want to be challenged in the classroom. Which is a huge reason why I want to attend Punahou.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…
