I believe that Literature is a very important part of each individual person. It is the building block to all reading and writing skills and helps develop critical thinking skills from a young age. Literature helps us unlock a world that we may not have access to otherwise, it helps us understand different cultures, art, and even history.
How has the importance of reading changed from earlier eras (pre-digital/audio/visual media) to our present day? Do you think we read differently now than we did in prior generations?
I think that reading has definitely been put on the back burner in today’s society. People pay more attention to social media and the latest games more than they do reading. This is due to the increased technology year after year. When I was a kid we went to our public library twice a week to check out books and would go home and sit reading for hours and hours. There is no longer a need for libraries today though as technology has put almost every book at our fingertips. There are hundreds of websites to download novels to read on I pads, Kindles and other tablets not to mention that most books are also available as audio books.

People live busier lives and have no time for literature anymore, more emphasis is put on social status and income in today’s society. Another reason is changing education curriculum, I have two children in high school and compared to when I was in school reading does not seem as important. I remember having to read books and do reports twice a month, reading and literature were very important parts of our schooling. My children have only been required to read 2 books the entire year, I would say that it a very large
