A Man Dark Inner Soul
Conrad in The Heart of Darkness is a novel that discussed the pitfalls of slavery, colonialism, and the demonization of a man. In the novel, Marlow, who is a captain of the steam boat, narrates his journey into the Congo of Africa and how he experiences the heart of darkness. The heart of darkness signifies a man inner demon and restrains tendencies for greed that arise to surface and take the best of him. The experience to the Congo was unpleasant and distasteful for Marlow; in addition, the poor weather and conditions of the natives was also bad, but not as bad and unbearable like a man’s inner demons. Conrad calls this corruption the heart of darkness because a man dark inner soul reveals when facing temptation for power and wealth. The Congo is unpleasant, dark, and foggy which symbolize man greed. Not only is the surrounding is surrounded by darkness, but the natives he encounters were suffering and deprived (p. 7-8). In the text, Marlow frequently uses the phrase, “the heart of dark” to indicate the savagery that hidden in a man’s heart. This phrase becomes symbolic in that it represents “civilized” man ability to become demonized without morals for the sake of imperialism. His main purpose into the Congo was to improve the land, better social structure for the natives, and to obtain Ivory, but because of greed the Ivory became the main goal. As time goes by and the length of time spent in the Congo, Kurtz became evil, blind by power, lawless of the Congo, and greed for wealth. He is running wild and using force to conquer the land and obtained ivory for power and wealth (p. 28). His main focus is to gain many ivories as possible and will destroy anyone who comes in the way of it. His inhuman and careless greed leads to many deaths of his people, African native, and even the attack on Marlow steam boat for the sake of not wanting to be capture. When Marlow encounter Kurtz, he appeared sick like an ivory skeleton and he barely could withhold himself
