What does anti-intellectualism mean? The meaning of anti-intellectualism is very vast but we can simplify that anti-intellectualism is hostility or oppose to intellectual people or matters. As a clear example for that is when standardized tests allow students to be or not to be in some educational spots or positions. For instance, some engineering colleges require high scores in SAT or ACT that just about math and vocabs, which is inaccurate for judging students education. Why is education very important in our lives? Education gives a person a good life, and is something that has become necessary. Most people will not have a good future without having a good education. In this paper, I would like to talk about education in terms of intellectualism …show more content…
However, other people disagree with these types of tests and see that they may be as obstacles for students because these tests might make students disappointed and see that achieving their degrees is impossible. Standardized testing is set up for students in order to evaluate them in terms of their education, however, that testing makes big concerns for students (Becket, 2003). Students take standardized tests for important reasons such as getting college admissions, passing levels or grades to be in higher, and also for getting good jobs. For getting college admission, students should get high scores in either SAT or ACT test. Also, there are averages for students’ scores in these tests in order to find some number of colleges which accept those scores’ averages. For example, the average for the SAT is 1500 out of 2400, including three 800-point sections such as critical reading, mathematics and writing, but 1100 or below is consider a low at just about any four- year college. That means, with scores below the averages in SAT and ACT tests students will face difficulties to find college admissions which are very important for them in order to get better future. So standardized tests are very important for students and at the same time they are concerning students. As it’s known that standardized tests make students …show more content…
Also, these tests can be inaccurate for judging how much students have learned. For example, there is no variety of science in many types of standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, GRE, GEMAT, TOEFL and IELTS, also, most of parts in these tests are just about mathematical problems and vocabs, which just can show students potential in these parts. However, some students are very shining in mathematics and variable questions but they have problems with the pressure of these tests. For instance, one friend of mine is very good in mathematics and English vocabs, and he was asked to get high score in AST test in order to get an admission from some college and there was no time before the semester beginning, which made him very afraid of missing the opportunity of going to that college. So he was under big pressure and then he got a weak score in that test, which was not really indicator for his ability. Most teachers see that standardized tests are very stressful for students also they are not sufficient indicators of learning and comprehension

    W. James Popham defines a standardized test as a “test that is administered, scored, and interpreted in a standard, predetermined manner.” Throughout high school, students take standardized tests and put those results on display for colleges to look at. However, colleges have stopped looking at big tests, such as the SAT or the ACT, when deciding if they want to accept a student. This is causing people to argue over whether this is the correct choice. Both “Standardized Test Scores are Useful Predictors of Academic Success in College” by Priscilla Rodriguez and “Standardized Test Scores are Not Useful Predictors of Academic Success in College” by Robert Schaeffer share their viewpoint on whether colleges should consider standardized testing…

Standardized testing is very significant in our day and age. To get into a good university they at least want you to have a twenty four, and just for having a twenty four you might have to take extra courses just because it still was not high enough. Why do colleges want scores so high? Why can't a student be based on the grades they have made in high school and not just on a single test? What is even the purpose for the ACT and SAT, students stress over these tests knowing that they have to get a certain score.…

These standardized tests are don't measure the whole person's ability, only math and reading. Since standardized tests only test you in math and reading some students will score low. They will score low because if they are getting tested over something they aren't good at or can't show their creativity they struggle for not being tested over something other than math and reading. I believe that standardized tests don't know your abilities they only focus on what you know in math and reading, but some students may be better in science or social studies. Standardized tests don't test our abilities and they don't show a student's true knowledge.…

Standardized Testing Does Not Accurately Represent Educational Quality Standardized tests are tests that are administered by the state and are graded in a consistent or “standard” manner. They are administered in hopes to measure a student's aptitude by assessing how well a student understands a collection of curriculum that the government deems is necessary for all high school students to understand. These tests are administered all across America. Tests such as the ACT and SAT are highly considered by colleges and universities in hopes to increase competition and ensure that only people who are “qualified” are allowed admittance to the school. Standardized tests are, in theory, necessary and beneficial to teachers and students…

Standardized tests only measure a small portion of a student’s education. There is so much more to a student’s education that makes it meaningful. A late education researcher by the name of Gerald W. Bracey, PhD said that qualities that standardized tests can’t quantify or measure include "creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, self-discipline, leadership, civic-mindedness, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, sense of beauty, sense of wonder, honesty, integrity. " There is more to a student than just how well or how poorly one does on a standardized test, but the tests themselves measure or inform schools that. On that same note, these tests don’t necessarily show us we’re capable of or how much we’ve learned.…

While standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT can display excellence in areas such math, science, and the English language, they do not have the ability to exhibit “non-traditional areas of intelligence” and leave “students gifted in the dramatic arts, art media [and] other different academic areas” unable to showcase their special talents (Webb, Candace. " Pro & Cons of the SAT Test"). A student may also do incredibly well in a school setting but falter when it comes time to take tests. Due to the extreme priority of these test scores, colleges, universities and other academic programs which regard these test scores so highly may fail to admit exceedingly capable students due to the emphasis on certain subjects and neglect to…

Even some of the wisest people have agreed that the SAT and other standardized tests are not valid indicators of a student's potential for success in college. In fact, they have said that standardized exams can be counterproductive for students trying to study to become better students in high school and improve their appeal to colleges. Colleges should not be allowed to use standardized exams as a main indicator of college readiness.…
