In today's world racism is not as common as it was in the 1900's. Racism has been a problem in the United States of America for a long time, and going back on time the African Americans were treated horribly. Elizabeth Eckford was an African-American girl who attended a High School with white people only. She was cursed and hit by many people but she didn’t stop fighting for her rights. The book " To Kill a Mockingbird" talks about Tom Robinson and a crime that he did not do it. He was judged and charged guilty only because of his skin color. Both stories talk about racism and the negative effect that had in both characters. Elizabeth Eckford attended Central High School on September 4, 1957.According to the article , as she attended the high school, a group of girls surrounded her and started yelling at Elizabeth. Even thought amendments and laws were supported African-Americans, the people didn’t follow them. The fourteenth amendment address citizenship …show more content…
It is shown by the white people against African Americans in many different ways. An example, when Tom Robinson,an African American man , was charged guilty of raping Mayella Ewell( a white girl) . Based on the case there was not shown a lot of evidence that she was raped. According to page 211 in the courtroom, Tom Robinson is placed guilty " I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was pulling the jury: Guilty...Guilty ..Guilty". Tom was placed guilty for a crime that he might not have done and he was judged only by his skin color. Another quote that showed racism was "They said if he had two good arms, he had made it, he was that fast, seventeen bullets holes in him" page 235. This quote shows that even police officers were racist. The jury judge him only by his skin color and everyone was racist . Racism affected Tom in a bad way because people were blaming him for something he didn’t
