1. What are the main problems with the poverty line? How is it measured and how does it relate to the contemporary situations of families?
The poverty line was originally measured based on the Department of Agriculture’s “Economy Food Plan, by using the amount of money that was needed to be spent on food. Mollie Orshansky of the Social Security Administration established that families spent about one third of their income on food, so for a family of three, the calculations was not enough, but the method could be used to calculate an insufficient amount for a family of such size.

The hardships offered more damage than any business owner should have been able to generate. Large companies took advantage of not only the lower class, but the middle class as well. The economy took an enormous fall when companies created false expectation amongst the manufacturing workers. To illustrate, the workers in the automobile industries were made to feel secure by given them raises and bonuses to produce desk top procedures for their jobs. And yet the documents they created were going overseas and to Mexico. The worker found out they were tricked into training someone for their very own positions. Psychological or emotional abuse is yelling, name calling, and threatening of violence amongst others. Sexual abuse consists of any type of sex or sexual contact with a minor 17 and under. Physical abuse has many faces, a child being beat with objects, punched, bruised, burned, and the breakage of any limbs, ect. Neglect can appear in the form of the lack of suitable clothing, poor hygiene, and ignoring your child’s needs. It can be medical, physical, emotional, and even educational.
