Tom is a controlling, bulky, racist, selfish individual who is married to Daisy, Gatsby's love. Tom shows his assertion in multiple ways, for example, he hits Myrtle at a party due to her constantly saying "Daisy" to him. This event in itself shows how controlling he is. During Gatsby and Tom's verbal quarrel, Tom was stating that he has always loved Daisy since the beginning. He guilt trips Daisy back into being with him by doing this, even though Gatsby is a much better candidate for her. Another selfish act that he did was immediately after that quarrel. Gatsby and Daisy ran over Myrtle, no one knows if it was an accident or not, while Daisy was driving. George had known that the car Gatsby and Daisy were in was once being driven by Tom previously; so he concludes that Tom is the one who ran her over.
