For this meta-analysis he used empirical findings to classify a trait items into one of the Five Factor Model (FFM dimensions), extraversion, agreeableness, consciousness, neuroticism, and openness. He used the strongest effect sizes of traits, published in empirical studies, that used different personality inventories such as California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and the sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), Eysenck psychoticism scale (EPQ), FFM. Furthermore each of those items were divided into positive and negative dimensions, in a total of ten categories. An item could either be in the category for C+ or C- for consciousness. C+ represented items such as careful, cautious, self-controlled, conscientious, orderly, responsible and while C- contains items such as direct expression of needs, psychopathic deviant. Although this method was useful heuristic for standardization the scales of various inventories, it had limitations. For example a traits such as warmth from the 16PF and psychoticism from Eysenck psychoticism scale EPQ which could be applied to more than one of the personality dimensions from FFM were eliminated.
