The technology used for designer babies is fairly new and there is not a guaranteed success. Parents use this procedure because there is no natural combination of the parent’s genetic material that could offer their offspring a healthier life. Genes are complex and if not done right, the entire procedure could lead to a disaster. Designer babies are known to stop a disease before it occurs in their child. Using the process Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) to screen the embryo for any genetic disorder can reduce the baby’s chance of being born with major health defects such as Down Syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and other very serious and sometimes even rare blood disorders (Fivek, 2012, para. 5-9). Not only are the health issues taken account for, medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, etc. Parents find it upsetting and difficult living with health conditions that so many couples are very reluctant to do anything to make sure that their children will not inherit any serious medical conditions and health defects. The process of designing babies is something that is slowly becoming a trend for many adults. Although this procedure is currently used for the purpose of preventing diseases, people would become more aware of designer babies and use this to their advantage. People would adopt this process to create their own desired child, however, this process does not have a guaranteed success. Not only is it not a guaranteed success, it is also unfair to the ones that cannot afford this procedure. If this process was to be adopted babies would be born in laboratories instead of hospitals. The children would look nothing like his or her parents, which could lead to a completely different generation of flawless human beings. There would be no sense of individuality and there would be no such thing as descendants because everyone would have been tailored to look how the parents wanted them to look. Instead of going against the traditions of childbirth to create an artificially perfect baby, people should embrace the traditional childbirth. Giving birth to a child that you do not have a clue to how they look, act, or behave gives excitement and life to a family.
