Diesel vehicles will hold their residual value better than gasoline counter parts. In fact, in a study by the university if Michigan, nine out of ten diesel cars and trucks had higher five-year residual value than their gasoline counterparts. Diesel engines are also built with heavier materials because of the massive compression used to ignite the fuel, so the engines last longer than gasoline engines (10) pg. 9. Diesel vehicles cost more than gasoline vehicles, but do not forget that diesel engines are much more simple than gasoline engines. "A diesel engine is more simple than a gas engine since it has no spark plugs and the associated electrical system needed for them (12) pg. 9." It is not an exact apples to apples comparison when it comes down to the price of diesel and gasoline. Even though diesel vehicles are more expensive when purchasing, they are still a more cost effective over the life of the vehicle. So the longer you have a diesel vehicle the more money you will save because the fuel costs are cheaper and they take you the extra mile per tank. The cost of diesel vehicle and gas vehicles vary, diesel vehicles are usually more expensive than their gasoline counter-parts. Research shows that more and more people are thinking about buying diesel vehicles, but aren't actually making the purchase. Some reasons for this lack of follow through could be the cost of the vehicle, not many models available in the United States, and not enough knowledge of alternative power sources (10) pg. 5. "The higher initial cost of diesel vehicles is because they don’t sell in volumes as high as those of their gasoline counterparts in the United States". A gasoline counterpart would be the gasoline engine that is comparable to the diesel engine. Which is another reason for higher cost of diesel fuel and
